{"id":28277,"date":"2018-07-17T06:53:55","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T06:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28277"},"modified":"2018-07-17T06:54:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T06:54:42","slug":"nanyu-township-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/07\/17\/nanyu-township-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanyu Township: a very large landslide in Gansu Province on Thursday 12th July 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Nanyu Township: a very large landslide in Gansu Province on Thursday 12th July 2018<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-07\/14\/c_137324109_7.htm\">Xinhua has posted some images<\/a> of a very large, partially valley blocking landslide that occurred at Nanyu Township in Zhouqu County, located in Gansu Province, China.\u00a0 The landslide, which was triggered by rainfall, is reported to have a volume of about 5 million cubic metres.\u00a0 The best image of the landslide itself is this one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-07\/14\/c_137324109_7.htm\">from Xinhua<\/a>, which shows the lower portion of the displaced mass.\u00a0 It is clear that it has greatly constricted the river channel:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28278\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28278\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28278\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/07\/18_07-Gansu-1-e1531807168599.jpg\" alt=\"Nanyu township\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The large landslide at Nanyu Township in Zhouqu County, northwest China&#8217;s Gansu Province. below.\u00a0 The location is 33.719, 104.421:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28286\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Province<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>My interpretation of this is that the failure is on a large, pre-existing landslide.\u00a0 From the Google Earth imagery considerable slope modification has occurred.\u00a0 The section of the slope that has failed in this event is shown in the image below:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28288\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img and instability, and it is interesting to note that the river has a series of rapids in this area.<\/p>\n<p>Gansu Province has a long landslide history.\u00a0 The following posts highlight landslides
