Image from the <a href=\"http:\/\/e.chengdu.cn\/html\/2018-07\/02\/content_627988.htm#thumb\">Chengdu Business Daily<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the boulder penetrated, and became wedged through, the windscreen of the coach.\u00a0 The driver, <span class=\"notranslate\">Zhao Jianguo, a 44 year old native of Chengdu, was pinned in his seat and was killed.\u00a0 A further six people were injured.\u00a0 Despite his fatal injuries the driver managed to steer the coach to a safe stop, saving the lives of the remaining passengers.\u00a0 The coach left a ten metre long skid mark in the road prior to hitting the guard rail, which is being interpreted as an indication that the driver was applying the brakes prior to the impact with the crash barrier on the side of the road, despite his very serious injuries.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/05\/04\/chongqing-1\/\">Rockfalls on highways in China are not unusual<\/a>, and impacts between rocks and vehicles are common in mountain chains around the world.\u00a0 I have not seen an example in which a boulder that must weigh several tonnes penetrates a vehicle in this way however.\u00a0 It is a truly freak accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are now well into the monsoon season across Asia, and reports of landslides are coming thick and fast, as expected.\u00a0 Spectacular debris flow videos are emerging from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/29\/lai-chau-1\/\">heavy rains in Vietnam for example<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=thykb7OkktY\">this remarkable example (which occurs in two phases)<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/thykb7OkktY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/view?t=s9qvA_1530518403\">And this one on Liveleak<\/a>, which I cannot embed (but is worth a look).<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 30th June a rockfall caused a freak fatal accident in Shimian County in Sichuan Province, China.
