{"id":28007,"date":"2018-06-22T07:07:06","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T07:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=28007"},"modified":"2018-06-22T07:07:06","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T07:07:06","slug":"ladakh-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/22\/ladakh-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A remarkable debris flow video from Ladakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A remarkable debris flow video from Ladakh<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TaJtuEAx7Vc\">A video has been posted on to Youtube in the last week<\/a> that shows a remarkable debris flow from Ladakh in northern India.\u00a0 According to the text the video was taken at <em>Nubra Ladakh<\/em>.\u00a0 It seems that that Nubra is, in the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nubra_Valley\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150\u00a0km north from Leh town, the capital of Ladakh district, India. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok river is a tributary of the Indus river. Still from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TaJtuEAx7Vc\">Youtube video<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The exact location of this event is not clear, but the of the debris flow origin appears to be one of the glaciated valleys:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28017\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28017\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28017\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/06\/18_06-Ladakh-1-e1529650266173.jpg\" alt=\"Ladakh\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the Nubra Valley in Ladakh, northern India.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The weather does not seem to indicate heavy rainfall, but this area is a high altitude desert in which rainfall is rare.\u00a0 The debris flow may be associated with a glacial event, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glacial_lake_outburst_flood\">GLOF<\/a>, or perhaps a localised cloudburst.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2010 the Ladakh region was hit by a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/08\/06\/debris-flow-disaster-in-leh-indian-kashmir\/\">very serious debris flow disaster<\/a>, which killed at least 234 people, with up to a further 800 people reported to have been lost. \u00a0\u00a0 There was a further significant event in this region is 2010, which caused substantial damage but claimed only two lives.\u00a0 In both cases the volume of rainfall was not large in global terms, but was exceptional for this region.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A remarkable video has been posted to Youtube showing a debris flow at Nubra in Ladakh, northern India.
