{"id":27999,"date":"2018-06-21T05:59:48","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T05:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=27999"},"modified":"2018-06-26T05:48:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T05:48:20","slug":"hidroituango-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/21\/hidroituango-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidroituango: Renewed movement suggests a landslide of up to 200,000 cubic metres may occur soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Hidroituango: Renewed movement suggests a landslide of up to 200,000 cubic metres may occur soon<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elcolombiano.com\/antioquia\/hidroituango-cierre-de-la-casa-de-maquinas-XY8890088\">News reports<\/a> suggest that there is an increase in movement on the slopes above the lake at <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/18\/hidroituango-10\/\">Hidroituango<\/a>.\u00a0 This is being interpreted by those responsible for monitoring at the site as indicating that a landslide in the range of 100,000 to 200,000 m\u00b3 may occur in the next few days. \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcnradio.com\/colombia\/antioquia\/evacuan-empleados-por-movimientos-en-la-montana-de-hidroituango\">RCN Radio reported last night<\/a> that workers have now been evacuated from the site in anticipation of the slip.\u00a0 However, there has not been a need to trigger new evacuations of the communities downstream over and above the 2,500 families that remain in emergency shelters.<\/p>\n<p>A landslide of up to 200,000 m\u00b3, whilst large, is not being considered as being sufficient to endanger the integrity of the dam, and nor is it expected to generate a wave of sufficient magnitude to trigger an overtopping event.\u00a0 In the last two weeks the level of the lake has dropped by seven metres as drier conditions affect the catchment.\u00a0 The reduced head of water has led to a decrease in the flow through the dam itself.<\/p>\n<p>The image below shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image<\/a> collected yesterday (20th June 2018) of the Hidroituango dam site.\u00a0 The location of the anticipated landslide is not clear, but the reduced level of the lake is apparent:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28004\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28004\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28004\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/06\/18_06-hidroituango-10-e1529560081474.jpg\" alt=\"Hidroituango\" width=\"640\" height=\"611\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image<\/a> of the Hidroituango dam site.
