{"id":27964,"date":"2018-06-18T05:35:33","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T05:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=27964"},"modified":"2018-06-18T05:35:33","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T05:35:33","slug":"hidroituango-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/18\/hidroituango-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidroituango: a substantial step towards reducing the immediate risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Hidroituango: a substantial step towards reducing the immediate risk<\/h4>\n<p>On Sunday a significant milestone was reached in the ongoing efforts to reduce the risks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/06\/04\/hidroituango-6\/\">Hidroituango dam site in Colombia<\/a>.\u00a0 Efforts have been ongoing to raise the crest of the dam, reducing the likelihood of it being overtopped by a wave triggered by the failure of the slopes around the lake.\u00a0 The first target was to reach 410 m, at which point the spillway became operational (should it be required).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elcolombiano.com\/antioquia\/hidroituango-presa-llega-a-la-cota-415-XJ8874374\">Yesterday the crest of the dam reached 415 m<\/a>, providing considerable additional security.<\/p>\n<p>The next target is 418 metres; the ultimate aim is to reach 435 metres.<\/p>\n<p>The consequence of these improvements to the structure is that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elheraldo.co\/colombia\/desciende-alerta-en-hidroituango-y-11-mil-personas-empiezan-retornar-sus-casas-507046\">level of warning has been reduced for a substantial part of the population living downstream from the dam<\/a>.\u00a0 This improved dam safety, plus the decease of inflows as the mountains upstream from the dam move out of the rainy season, has allowed 11,000 people to move back.\u00a0 However, 4,000 people remain evacuated.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27969\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27969\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27969\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/06\/18_06-hidroituango-9-e1529299601880.jpg\" alt=\"Hidroituango\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A recent image of the dam site at Hidroituango.
