{"id":27798,"date":"2018-05-28T05:37:24","date_gmt":"2018-05-28T05:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=27798"},"modified":"2018-05-28T05:38:31","modified_gmt":"2018-05-28T05:38:31","slug":"ituango-dam-site-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/05\/28\/ituango-dam-site-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Another landslide at the Ituango dam site in Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Another landslide at the Ituango dam site in Colombia<\/h4>\n<p>On 26th May 2018 a further landslide occurred at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/05\/23\/hidroituango-dam-site-3\/\">Ituango dam site (Hidroituango) in Colombia<\/a>.\u00a0 The slope failure led to the evacuation of the 1500 workers at the site.\u00a0 There were no injuries and the integrity of the dam does not seem to be threatened.\u00a0 The best report that I can find is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elespectador.com\/noticias\/nacional\/nuevo-derrumbe-en-hidroituango-obliga-evacuar-trabajadores-articulo-790927\">El Espectador<\/a> (in Spanish of course), a translated version of which is as follows:-<\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Empresas P\u00fablicas de Medell\u00edn (EPM) inform\u00f3 que en la tarde de este s\u00e1bado se present\u00f3 un nuevo deslizamiento de tierra en el proyecto hidroel\u00e9ctrico Ituango, que est\u00e1 en alerta desde el pasado 28 de abril.\">Empresas P\u00fablicas de Medell\u00edn (EPM) reported that a new landslide occurred on the afternoon of this Saturday in the Ituango hydroelectric project, which has been on alert since April 28. <\/span><span title=\"La empresa inform\u00f3 que, debido al hecho, los 1.500 trabajadores que se encontraban trabajando en el proyecto fueron evacuados.\">The company reported that, due to the fact, the 1,500 workers who were working on the project were evacuated.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span title=\"EPM inform\u00f3 adem\u00e1s que no hubo trabajadores heridos a ra\u00edz del hecho y que en este momento se est\u00e1n haciendo las evaluaciones t\u00e9cnicas necesarias para saber cu\u00e1ndo pueden retomar las labores en el proyecto. \">EPM also informed that there were no workers injured as a result of the incident and that at this moment the necessary technical evaluations are being done to know when they can resume work on the project.\u00a0 <\/span><span title=\"Tras el derrumbe, las autoridades tomaron la decisi\u00f3n de suspender el tr\u00e1fico vehicular desde y hacia el casco urbano del municipio de Ituango.\">After the collapse, the authorities made the decision to suspend vehicular traffic to and from the urban center of the Ituango municipality. <\/span><span title=\"Los ciudadanos que tengan que entrar o salir del pueblo durante el domingo 27 de mayo, d\u00eda de elecciones presidenciales, tendr\u00e1n que hacerlo por medio de lanchas. \">Citizens who have to enter or leave the town on Sunday, May 27, presidential election day, will have to do it by boat.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Images of the landslide suggest that it was much smaller than the earlier event, and occurred on a slope above the area that had been cut.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Julianaramirez6\/status\/1000547661286727681\">Juliana Ramirez tweeted an image of the landslide<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27799\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27799\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27799\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/05\/18_05-ituango-8-e1527484108520.jpg\" alt=\"Ituango dam site\" width=\"640\" height=\"761\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new landslide at the Ituango dam site in Colombia. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Julianaramirez6\/status\/1000547661286727681\">Image tweeted by Juliana Ramirez<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide was also caught on a video that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z6uV32LNv5M&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;a=\">posted to Youtube by Noticias Caracol<\/a>:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z6uV32LNv5M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Landslides associated with impounding of the lake at a large dam are not unusual &#8211; the stability of the slopes declines as the groundwater level rises.\u00a0 This latest slope failure is perhaps surprising in that it has occurred so high up the slope though.<\/p>\n<p>This site has now suffered the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/05\/21\/hidroituango-1\/\">initial tunnel collapse, the large landslide a few hundred metres upstream of the Ituango dam site<\/a>, and now this small landslide above the works.\u00a0 These events continue to ask questions about the degree to which the geotechnical conditions of the site are fully understood.\u00a0 I am sure that will be a major theme as the dam is commissioned.\u00a0 In the short-term EPM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elespectador.com\/economia\/evacuan-trabajadores-en-hidroituango-por-caida-de-material-articulo-791054\">are doing the right things in maintaining the evacuations, strengthening the crest of the dam and monitoring the slopes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday another landslide happened at the Ituango dam site.  This was a smaller failure above a slope that has been cut and mitigated. 1500 workers were evacuated from the site, but no-one was injured.
