{"id":27392,"date":"2018-04-10T23:55:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T23:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=27392"},"modified":"2018-04-11T00:01:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T00:01:36","slug":"karimabad-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/04\/10\/karimabad-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Karimabad, Pakistan: a dramatic rock and ice avalanche caught on video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Karimabad, Pakistan: a dramatic rock and ice avalanche caught on video<\/h4>\n<p>On Monday a very large rock and ice avalanche struck near to Karimabad in Hunza, northern Pakistan.\u00a0 This event appears to have involved a large failure on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultar\">Ultar Glacier<\/a>, which is close to the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baltit_Fort\">Baltit Fort<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the Google Earth perspective view of the Ultar Glacier, with the settlement of Karimabad in the foreground:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27397\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27397\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27397\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/04\/18_04-Karimabad-1-e1523402925555.jpg\" alt=\"Karimabad\" width=\"640\" height=\"534\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth imagery of the Ultar Glacier, with Karimabad in the foreground<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide was caught on a dramatic video, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WRtrz41UHcc\">posted on Youtube<\/a>, taken from the Baltit Fort:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WRtrz41UHcc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>News reports suggest that five people were caught in the rock and ice avalanche.\u00a0 Of these, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/190381-rain-weather\">two have been rescued<\/a>, but the prospects for the other three do not look to be good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2018\/04\/09\/two-locals-and-a-domestic-tourist-missing-after-massive-landslide-in-ultar-hunza\/\">The Pamir Times<\/a> has a good news report about this event, which includes a terrific gallery of images of the aftermath of the event, taken by Ali Hurmat.\u00a0 This image appears to show the rock and ice avalanche deposit, possibly with the glacier in the background:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27405\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27405\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27405\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/04\/18_04-Karimabad-2-e1523403405171.jpg\" alt=\"Karimabad\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The aftermath of the rock and ice avalanche near to Karimabad. Image by Ali Hurmat via the <a href=\"https:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2018\/04\/09\/two-locals-and-a-domestic-tourist-missing-after-massive-landslide-in-ultar-hunza\/\">Pamir Times.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This event appears to be very similar to the giant rock and ice avalanche that struck the military camp at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_Gayari_Sector_avalanche\">Gayari in Siachen, Pakistan, six years ago<\/a>.\u00a0 It is only a few kilometres downstream from the very large <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/05\/17\/attabad-landslide-geohazards-5-presentation\/\">Attabad landslide<\/a>, which blocked the Hunza river in 2010.\u00a0 These sorts of events often start as a rockslope failure onto the glacier, which then entrains debris to become a rock and ice avalanche.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see if this is the case here.\u00a0 Satellite data is not yet available, but hopefully the skies will clear in the next few days.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday a very large rock and ice avalanche occurred at Karimabad, in Hunza, northern Pakistan.
