{"id":27170,"date":"2018-03-15T08:36:18","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T08:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=27170"},"modified":"2018-03-15T08:36:18","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T08:36:18","slug":"llusco-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/03\/15\/llusco-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Llusco, Peru: a dramatic landslide has destroyed 100 houses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Llusco, Peru: a dramatic landslide has destroyed 100 houses<\/h4>\n<p>A major landslide at Llusco in the Cusco region of Peru over the last few days has led to the destruction of over 100 houses, and the declaration of a state of emergency by the government.\u00a0 The local authorities have stated that the landslide was caused by high pore water pressures, rather than by seismic activity. T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-03\/04\/c_137014162.htm\">he landslide is reported to cover an area of about 30 hectares<\/a>.\u00a0 The best images that I have seen of the landslide reside in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FCPxplg1oZA\">Youtube video that was shot by a drone by Fameco Films and Art<\/a>.\u00a0 This should be visible below:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FCPxplg1oZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on this video the landslide appears to be a very large slump, with movement of a very large block.\u00a0 However, the shear surface is, I suspect, non-circular, which has caused the block to fracture extensively.\u00a0 This can be seen in the image below, taken from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FCPxplg1oZA\">video<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27173\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27173\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27173\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/03\/18_03-Llusco-1-e1521102047535.jpg\" alt=\"Llusco landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"346\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Extensive fracturing in the displaced mass at Llusco in Peru.
