Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/kashmirmonitor.in\/Details\/143204\/day-4-kashmir-remains-cut-off-due-to-landslides\">The Kashmir Monitor<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Most impressive is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GO9HTf0XQ98\">video below<\/a>, which was posted onto Youtube yesterday, showing a very major slope collapse.\u00a0 The associated text indicates only that this occurred at Ramban:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GO9HTf0XQ98?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This appears to show a really very large slide.\u00a0 Google Earth suggests that Ramban is an area with a very high density of landslides.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26895\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26895\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26895\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/02\/18_02-ramban-2-e1518764672551.jpg\" alt=\"Ramban\" width=\"640\" height=\"726\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the Ramban area of northern India, showing the high density of landslides.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear to me as to why this zone is so landslide prone.\u00a0 Fortunately the highway is on the east side of the river whilst most of the landslides are on the west.\u00a0 Nonetheless this must be an extremely challenging section of road to maintain.\u00a0 The image above shows the very high level of risk to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the clearance of these landslides.<\/p>\n<p>I have noted serious landslides in Ramban previously.\u00a0 For example, in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/03\/22\/multiple-landslides-1\/\">March 2016 there were reports of landslides in the Ramsu area of Ramban<\/a>, whilst in J<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/06\/09\/landslide-reports-june-2011\/\">une 2011 there was a fatal landslide in the Banihal area of Ramban<\/a>. And finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/09\/19\/university-of-east-anglia-1\/\">in September 2014 a major landslide was captured on video in the Ramban area<\/a> that was causing substantial disruption on the road.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last few days landslides have affected parts of Northern India, most notably Ramban District, effectively cutting off the Kashmir Valley.
