{"id":26533,"date":"2018-01-16T08:11:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-16T08:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=26533"},"modified":"2018-01-16T08:11:47","modified_gmt":"2018-01-16T08:11:47","slug":"montecito-debris-flows-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2018\/01\/16\/montecito-debris-flows-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Satellite images of the Montecito debris flows in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Satellite images of the Montecito debris flows in California<\/h4>\n<p>Last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.com\/news\/2018\/jan\/14\/montecito-debris-flow-devastation-concentrated-alo\/\">significant debris flows struck the Montecito area of California<\/a>.\u00a0 At least 20 people were killed, with a further four people reported as being missing.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/04\/05\/mocoa-debris-flow-2\/\">highly mobile flows<\/a> barreled down three major gullies, the Montecito, San Ysidro, and Romero creeks in the hills to the north of the community.\u00a0 This area was severely burnt by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Fire\">Thomas Fire in December<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/12\/13\/after-wildfires-southern-california-faces-risk-of-mudslides.html?view=story&amp;%24DEVICE%24=native-android-mobile\">vulnerability of the area affected by the fire to landslides had been highlighted in advance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> have now imaged the area affected by the landslides, and have kindly made the imagery available to me.\u00a0 Once again I am amazed at the quality of the images that they are able to collect.\u00a0 This image, collected on 10th January, 2018, shows the area affected by the landslides:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26536\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26536\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26536\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-montecito-2-e1516088698749.jpeg\" alt=\"Montecito debris flows\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image<\/a> of the Montecito debris flows area<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Note the severely burnt and eroded area to the north of the town. and the obviously denuded hillsides that were the source of the flows.\u00a0 The high resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/api.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image<\/a> below provides a perspective on the area affected by the flows themselves:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26537\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26537\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26537\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-montecito-e1516088918848.jpeg\" alt=\"Montecito debris flows\" width=\"640\" height=\"1199\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image <\/a>of the Montecito debris flows<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The flow emerging from the gully is clear in the image once you look carefully.\u00a0 The imagery shows the extraordinary trail of destruction left by the flows all the way from the mouth of the gully to the coast.\u00a0 This is a more detailed image of the area close to the mouth of the gully:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26538\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26538\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26538\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-Montecito-3-e1516089309883.jpg\" alt=\"Montecito debris flows\" width=\"640\" height=\"843\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs image<\/a> of the damage caused by the Montecito debris flows.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The swathe of destruction caused by the flows is clear &#8211; in places it is even possible to see partially buried houses.\u00a0 This damage continues to a greater or lesser extent all the way to the coast.\u00a0 The image below shows the southern part of the town &#8211;
