Image from a drone video on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7DATFoizswY&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Youtube by Steven Mack<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The latest reports suggest that the crack is widening at a rate of about 30 cm per week at present.\u00a0 Interestingly <a href=\"http:\/\/kimatv.com\/news\/local\/crack-in-the-rattlesnake-ridge-is-slowly-growing\">KIMA TV reports<\/a> that the expectation is that the slope will self-stabilise:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Senior Emergency Planner Horace Ward said they have not determined a cause yet and said it&#8217;s just nature. Ward said the ridge is being monitored and they think the slide will stop itself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could continue to move slowly enough to where it kind of just keeps spilling a little bit of material into the quarry until it creates a toe for itself to stop and stabilize the hillside,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The implication of this is that it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/12\/21\/folkestone-warren\/\">rotational slip<\/a>.\u00a0 However, the tension crack has quite a complex structure, with some evidence of the development of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/12\/19\/ventnor-paper-1\/\">graben structure<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26463\" style=\"width: 641px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26463\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26463\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-Rattlesnake-Ridge-4.jpg\" alt=\"Rattlesnake Ridge\" width=\"631\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-Rattlesnake-Ridge-4.jpg 631w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2018\/01\/18_01-Rattlesnake-Ridge-4-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trension crack at Rattlesnake Ridge.
