this significant failure is the subject of intense speculation in Malaysia, with questions being asked about the rate of development that is being undertaken in hillslope areas.\u00a0 I suspect that a key area of the investigation may well be the slope protection measures that were in place.\u00a0 It is clear that considerable slope cutting had been undertaken to create the site for the apartments.\u00a0 It seems surprising to me that these cuts, in apparently weathered materials, appear to have limited measures in place to ensure the stability of the slopes.\u00a0 Interestingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2017\/10\/23\/drone-pix-may-have-captured-slope-damage-tanjung-bungah-project-buyer-photographed-site-months-ago\/\">The Star newspaper in Malaysia<\/a> has some drone imagery taken if the site in July that appears to show that this section of the cut slope was facing stability issues:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25997\" style=\"width: newspaper.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia has a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/02\/02\/jalan-kenanga-malaysia\/\">long history of substantial landslides<\/a>, some of which have been associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/12\/29\/a-very-large-engineered-slope-failure-in-malaysia-bukit-setiawangsa\/\">major construction projects<\/a>.\u00a0 Back in 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/11\/07\/the-national-slope-masterplan-in-malaysia\/\">Malaysia produced a National Slope Masterplan<\/a>, although sadly this is no longer available online. \u00a0 Interestingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2017\/10\/23\/tanjung-bungah-residents-why-did-project-go-ahead-when-doe-rejected-it\/\">news reports suggest<\/a> that the Department of Environment rejected plans for this project in 2015.\u00a0 A Commission of Inquiry has been established to look into this landslide.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!--
