{"id":25976,"date":"2017-10-17T06:31:43","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T06:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25976"},"modified":"2017-10-17T06:31:43","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T06:31:43","slug":"bellavista-heap-leach-gold-mine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/10\/17\/bellavista-heap-leach-gold-mine\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bellavista heap leach gold mine landslide in 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Bellavista heap leach gold mine landslide in 2007<\/h4>\n<p>On 21st October 2007 a landslide effectively closed the Bellavista heap leach gold mine in Costa Rica.\u00a0 This landslide is subject to a court case that is currently being heard in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, with a claim if about $100 million being made against SRK Consulting (US), who undertook engineering and design work, by B2Gold, based in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>Cyanide heap leaching involves creating piles of crushed ore, mined from an open pit site in this case, which are then washed with cyanide solution.\u00a0 The leachate is then collected at the foot of the pile, allowing the gold to be extracted.\u00a0 Clearly the risks of pollution are sufficiently high that great care is needed to protect the integrity of the heap.\u00a0 The Bellavista site is located in heavily weathered, humid tropical mountains that are also seismically active.\u00a0 Slope instability is a challenge in such environments, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/12\/23\/recipe\/\">as multiple examples on this blog have shown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theecologist.org\/blogs_and_comments\/commentators\/2282038\/tpp_power_to_the_corporations_at_the_expense_of_the_planet.html\">The Tierra Group<\/a> has a description of the work that they undertook at the site in 2007, which includes this image of the ore heap:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25978\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25978\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25978\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/10\/17_10-Bellavista-1-e1508219890456.jpg\" alt=\"Bellavista heap leach gold mine,\" width=\"640\" height=\"229\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bellavista heap leach gold mine, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tierragroupinternational.com\/project\/mina-bellavista\/\">the Tierra Group<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In their description of the project, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tierragroupinternational.com\/project\/mina-bellavista\/\">the Tierra Group state that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>&#8230;our Team\u00a0\u00a0performed a geologic hazard assessment which ultimately identified existence of a mega-landslide (35,000,000 m<sup>3<\/sup>) underlying a waste rock dump and flanking a heap leach pad. A site wide Environmental Audit was prepared for the Secretaria T\u00e9cnica Nacional Ambiental.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This landslide induced instability in the heap; unconfirmed <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.infomine.com\/articles\/1\/2109\/leach.failure.bellavista\/bellavista.heap.leach.aspx\">reports suggest<\/a> that movement was observed in 2006. The mine was reportedly closed in July 2007.
