{"id":25878,"date":"2017-10-05T06:51:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-05T06:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25878"},"modified":"2017-10-05T06:51:10","modified_gmt":"2017-10-05T06:51:10","slug":"hurricane-maria-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/10\/05\/hurricane-maria-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Maria: USGS landslide impact maps from Puerto Rico reveal the extent of the devastation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Hurricane Maria: USGS landslide impact maps from Puerto Rico reveal the extent of the devastation<\/h4>\n<p>From across the Atlantic, the response of the White House to the Hurricane Maria disaster in Puerto Rico looks astonishing.\u00a0 With little fanfare, the USGS has now started to release <a href=\"https:\/\/landslides.usgs.gov\/research\/featured\/2017-maria-pr\/\">maps of the impacts of landslides triggered by the hurricane<\/a>, created through the analysis of satellite imagery.\u00a0 USGS staff are past masters at this sort of mapping, which is both challenging and time-consuming.\u00a0 They have released the first tranche of data, for a part of northwest Puerto Rico:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25883\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25883\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25883\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/10\/17_10-PR-1-e1507184218928.jpg\" alt=\"Hurricane Maria\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/landslides.usgs.gov\/research\/featured\/2017-maria-pr\/\">USGS map of the impacts of landslides triggered by Hurricane Maria<\/a> for a part of Puerto Rico.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that this not a landslide map, it is a map of the impacts of landslides &#8211; i.e. the locations in which a landslide has affected a road, a building or another element of infrastructure.\u00a0 This is illustrated by one of the images that the USGS has released alongside the map:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25886\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25886\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25886\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/10\/17_10-PR-2-e1507184635616.jpg\" alt=\"Hurricane Maria\" width=\"640\" height=\"722\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Digital Globe image of the imoacts of landslides triggered by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
