{"id":25822,"date":"2017-09-29T07:04:20","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T07:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25822"},"modified":"2017-10-02T16:32:59","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T16:32:59","slug":"rize-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/09\/29\/rize-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Rize, Turkey &#8211; an extreme rainfall event yesterday triggered landslides and flash floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Rize, Turkey &#8211; an extreme rainfall event yesterday triggered landslides and flash floods<\/h4>\n<p>The Rize area of Turkey yesterday suffered an extreme rainfall event.\u00a0 At the moment details are quite sketchy &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/2017\/09\/28\/flash-flood-cayeli-rize-turkey\/\">the Watchers reports that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At least one person has died after heavy rain caused major flash floods and landslides in\u00a0the Rize region of northeastern Turkey, on September 28, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The person who died was identified in reports as a 40-year-old, Songul Tolan. The incident is reported to have happened in the village of Gurp\u0131nar, near Cayeli.<\/p>\n<p>Weather stations in the region recorded 150 mm (5.9 inches) of rain within 6 hours.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are some very dramatic videos online showing the effects, most notably the large landslide captured in this recording:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gwE4OC50yLc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This appears to be a large, rapid, potentially damaging landslide, but I can find no further details as yet. I have tried to improve a still from the video:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25826\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25826\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Rize-1a.jpg\" alt=\"Rize\" width=\"640\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Rize-1a.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Rize-1a-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A still from the Youtube video showing the large landslide in Rize, Turkey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmm.nasa.gov\/data-access\/global-viewer\">NASA 24 hour Global Precipitation Measurement data<\/a> shows a rain cell sitting over the Rize area of Turkey, and a much larger one (with indicative maximum rainfall levels of over 229 mm in places) to the east in Azerbaijan:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25828\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25828\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25828\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Rize-2-e1506666965346.jpg\" alt=\"Rize\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmm.nasa.gov\/data-access\/global-viewer\">NASA GMP data<\/a> showing a large rainfall event over eastern Turkey.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, there also <a href=\"http:\/\/agenda.ge\/news\/87788\/eng\">reports of landslides in Georgia yesterday<\/a>, close to the western coast of the Black Sea.\u00a0 The rainfall event that I presume was responsible for this is also visible in the GMP image.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey is of course no stranger to highly destructive landslides, and there are several publications, <a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2012EGUGA..14.7246S\">such as this one<\/a>, that highlight the risks.\u00a0 In my paper on human losses from landslides (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/geology\/article\/40\/10\/927\/130722\/Global-patterns-of-loss-of-life-from-landslides\">Petley 2010<\/a>) I noted that Turkey suffered 22 fatal landslides between 2004 and 2010, with 85 resultant fatalities (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2012\/08\/16\/global-patterns-of-loss-of-life-from-landslides-my-new-paper-in-the-journal-geology\/\">see my blog post about this work<\/a>).\u00a0 In the period since there have been many more landslides associated with heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<h4>Reference<\/h4>\n<p>Petley, D.N. 2012. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/geology\/article\/40\/10\/927\/130722\/Global-patterns-of-loss-of-life-from-landslides\">Global patterns of loss of life from landslides<\/a><em>.
