{"id":25792,"date":"2017-09-27T07:17:02","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T07:17:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25792"},"modified":"2017-09-27T07:17:02","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T07:17:02","slug":"heifangtai-terrace-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/09\/27\/heifangtai-terrace-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Heifangtai terrace: spectacular loess flowslides in Gansu Province, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Heifangtai terrace: a location of spectacular loess flowslides<\/h4>\n<p>Loess, a windblown silt deposit, mantles about 6% of the land area of China.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/05\/03\/badakhshan-landslide-1\/\">As I have noted previously<\/a>, these thick loess deposits generate some of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/05\/02\/kyrgyzstan-loess-landslide\/\">spectacular landslides on earth<\/a> because of their <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2009\/09\/13\/on-the-loss-of-life-in-landslides-during-the-1949-khait-earthquake\/\">potential to undergo fluidisation<\/a>, allowing landslides to transition into highly destructive, long runout flowslides.\u00a0 In a recent paper published in the journal <em>Engineering Geology<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795217312784#f0010\">Qi <em>et al<\/em>. (2017)<\/a> describe loess landslides on the Heifangtai terrace, which is located at the confluence of the Yellow River and the Huangshi River in Gansu Province, northwestern China.\u00a0 This terrace, which is located at 36.0916, 103.3089 if you want to take a look, has a cap of about 26-48 metres of loess.\u00a0 It is both populated (primarily by people relocated from the site of a hydroelectric plant) and irrigated.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795217312784#f0010\">Qi <em>et al<\/em>. (2017)<\/a> describe 17 loess landslides on the margins of the terrace &#8211; you can see many of these in the Google Earth image below:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25793\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25793\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25793\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Loess-1-e1506492414983.jpg\" alt=\"Heifangtai terrace\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the Heifangtai Terrace in Gansu, China<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795217312784#f0010\">Qi <em>et al<\/em>. (2017)<\/a> highlight in particular a pair of landslides that have developed in the Moshi Gully on the flanks of the terrace between 2004 and 2013.\u00a0 This image shows the site of these two landslides, on the southern edge of the terrace, in December 2004:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25797\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25797\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25797\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Loess-2-e1506492850385.jpg\" alt=\"Heifangtai Terrace\" width=\"640\" height=\"421\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the site of the landslides on the edge of the Heifangtai Terrace in 2004<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>By November 2012 notable instability had started to develop at two sites on the terrace edge.\u00a0 I have marked the headscarps of the two landslides.\u00a0 At this stage the landslides appear to have low levels of mobility:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25798\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25798\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25798\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Loess-3-e1506493249438.jpg\" alt=\"Heifangtai Terrace\" width=\"640\" height=\"419\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image from November 2012 showing the two landslides on the Heifangtai Terrace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>By February 2015 one of the two landslides, the one further from the camera, had developed significantly.\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795217312784#f0010\">Qi <em>et al<\/em>. (2017)<\/a> note, this slide had shows retrogression of the headscarp and had started to develop a clear flow-type structure.\u00a0 Note though that the mobility is still low:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25799\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25799\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25799\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Loess-4-e1506494964730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"418\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image from February 2015 showing the two landslides on the Heifangtai Terrace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>But by September 2015 the landslides have changed dramatically:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25803\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25803\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25803\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/09\/17_09-Loess-5-e1506495376324.jpg\" alt=\"Heifangtai Terrace\" width=\"640\" height=\"417\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image from September 2015 showing the landslides on the Heifangtai Terrace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Both slides have failed spectacularly, with the one in the foreground in particular showing very high mobility and extreme retrogression.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013795217312784#f0010\">Qi <em>et al<\/em>.
