{"id":2575,"date":"2011-02-04T14:48:20","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T14:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=2575"},"modified":"2011-02-04T14:48:20","modified_gmt":"2011-02-04T14:48:20","slug":"cyclone-yasi-a-gallery-of-the-damage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/02\/04\/cyclone-yasi-a-gallery-of-the-damage\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclone Yasi &#8211; a gallery of the damage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the UK, the media reports on the landfall of Cyclone Yasi have mostly focused on the impacts not being as serious as had been feared.\u00a0 This is the case only because the storm cams ashore away from the large urban centres.\u00a0 In the communities directly in the path of the cyclone the impact has been dreadful, although fortunately with only a single life lost so far.\u00a0 ABC News has a picture gallery of the worst affected areas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/events\/cyclone-yasi\/gallery.htm\">here<\/a>. \u00a0 The two images that best capture the impact of the event are in my opinion these two below.<\/p>\n<p>First, imagine the strength of wind that will do this to a set of rugby goal posts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2576\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-1.jpg 940w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-1-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And second, this collection of ruined boats is quite extraordinary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2577\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-2.jpg 940w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Yasi-2-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the remnants of the storm are slowly dissipating across central Australia, but continue to pack a fearsome punch.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/cgi-bin\/wrap_fwo.pl?IDD20040.txt\">current weather warning for the Northern Territory<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"font-family: courier\"><\/p>\n<pre>SEVERE WEATHER WARNING\r\nfor Damaging Winds and Flash flooding\r\nfor people in the eastern Alice Springs, Barkly and eastern Roper-McArthur\r\nDistricts.\r\nIssued at 11:00 pm CST Friday 4 February 2011\r\n\r\nSynoptic Situation: At 9.30 pm CST, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi 994 hPa was located\r\nin the eastern Alice Springs District near latitude 23.0S, longitude 137.3E,\r\nabout 120 kilometres east of Jervois. It is moving towards the southwest at\r\nabout 18 km\/h.   \r\n\r\nDamaging wind gusts up to 95 km\/h are expected with thunderstorms in the eastern\r\nAlice Springs District overnight.
