Yasi &#8211; potential impacts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unfortunately, my bizarre track record for promoting disaster wherever I go is once again coming to fruition.\u00a0 Two days before I fly to Australia, the north-east coast of that country is about to be struck by a category 5 (the strongest type) cyclone, named Cyclone Yasi.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/products\/IDQ65002.shtml\">Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a map<\/a> of the likely landfall zone:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Cyclone-Yasi-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2568\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/02\/11_02-Cyclone-Yasi-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the impact of this event is likely to be severe.\u00a0 Whilst we tend to think of cyclones (hurricanes) as wind events, the range of impacts is much greater.\u00a0 Generally, such a storm is associated with very rough seas, high winds (including very strong gusts), storm surge and finally intense rainfall.\u00a0\u00a0 In the southern hemisphere, the most severely affected area is typically just to the left (in the direction of travel) of the eye, where the forward motion of the storm combines with storm generated wind speed to generate extremely high winds and a large storm surge,\u00a0 This is why the forecast of the most-severely affected area has a bulge in that direction.<\/p>\n<p>The Google Earth image of (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A quick zoom into the area around Innisfail emphasises the vulnerability of the region to a storm of this size.\u00a0 Note the linear features close to the shoreline in the southeast corner of the image.\u00a0 These are I suspect ancient coastlines:<\/p>\n<p><a
