{"id":25322,"date":"2017-08-29T07:10:41","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T07:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25322"},"modified":"2017-08-29T07:10:41","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T07:10:41","slug":"zhangjiawan-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/29\/zhangjiawan-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Zhangjiawan landslide: a massive rockslope collapse with 35 fatalities caught on a remarkable video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Zhangjiawan landslide: a massive rockslope collapse with 35 fatalities caught on a remarkable video<\/h4>\n<p>Whilst so much attention is focused on a very different, very serious disaster in Houston, another major landslide accident has occurred in China, this time in Zhangjiawan in Ghuizhou Province.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-08\/28\/c_136562990_2.htm\">Xinhua reports<\/a> three known fatalities and 32 people missing; the likelihood of any further survivors is vanishingly small. The landslide occurred at 10:40 am yesterday (28th August) at Zhangjiawan Township, Nayong County.\u00a0 The slide buried 34 houses; seven people were recovered alive but injured.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-08\/28\/c_136562990.htm\">Xinhua has two very impressive images of the landslide<\/a>.\u00a0 This one provides a panoramic overview of the site:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25326\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25326\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25326\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Zhangjiawan-1-e1503988378409.jpg\" alt=\"Zhangjiawan landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-08\/28\/c_136562990.htm\">Xinhua image<\/a> of the Zhangjiawan landslide in Nayong County, Guizhou Province<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst this one provides more detail of both the landslide source area and the deposit:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25328\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25328\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25328\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Zhangjiawan-2-e1503988708115.jpg\" alt=\"Zhangjiawan landslide \" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2017-08\/28\/c_136562990_4.htm\">Xinhua image<\/a> of the aftermath of the Zhangjiawan landslide in China<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most amazingly, this landslide was captured on a video that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vQtU1s8bc_8\">uploaded onto Youtube by CCTV<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vQtU1s8bc_8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This appears to be a massive rockslide, with a fair amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/07\/23\/rock-topple-france\/\">toppling<\/a> as the landslide developed.\u00a0 Unusually for a non-seismic slide the failure seems to have developed from the ridge crest and then to have entrained debris from lower on the slope.\u00a0 The result is a landslide with a morphology that is more reminiscent of an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/11\/jiuzhaigou-earthquake-2\/\">earthquake-induced slide<\/a>.\u00a0 It is notable that there is a high proportion of highly weathered material in the landslide, especially in the scar, much of which seems to have fallen from the upper part of the slope (the deposit itself is mostly intact rock blocks with a mantle of weathered material).\u00a0 This suggests perhaps that there was a highly weathered zone high on the slope that provided the structural weakness for the failure.<\/p>\n<p>The trigger for the landslide is not clear, but this is of course the rainy season in China<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the Zhangjiawan landslide, a massive rockslope collapse in Guizhou,China,caused 35 fatalities.
