{"id":25162,"date":"2017-08-15T23:11:04","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T23:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25162"},"modified":"2017-08-15T23:11:04","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T23:11:04","slug":"regent-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/15\/regent-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Regent landslide, Sierra Leone: an uncertain picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Regent landslide, Sierra Leone: an uncertain picture<\/h5>\n<p>There is widespread, front page reporting this morning of the Regent landslide tragedy in Sierra Leone.\u00a0 This is without doubt the biggest event (so far) in a bad year for landslide accidents worldwide; sadly, with some months of the main global landslide season to run the losses will continue to mount.\u00a0 The Sierra Leone tragedy was triggered by heavy rainfall, with the main event appearing to be a large landslide in the Regent area, on the margins of the city of Freetown.\u00a0 The best image that I have found that provides an overview of the Regent landslide is this one, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.switsalone.com\/25542_sierra-leone-what-we-know-so-far-about-the-mudslide-disaster-in-freetown\/\">Switsalone<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25163\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25163\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25163\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Regent-1-e1502837296677.jpg\" alt=\"Regent landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Overview of the Regent landslide in Sierra Leone. Image via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.switsalone.com\/25542_sierra-leone-what-we-know-so-far-about-the-mudslide-disaster-in-freetown\/\">Switsalone<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a large slide, but for a slide of this size to kill so many (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-40933490\">estimates of the death toll<\/a> are currently around 400, with at least another 300, and possibly 1500, still missing) is unusual and a little perplexing.\u00a0 The landslide appears to be in deeply weathered soil (typical of this area), with the slide occurring on the boundary between bedrock and weather material, based on this image from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/sierra-leone-mudslide-270-bodies-recovered-n792741\">NBC \/ Reuters<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25167\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25167\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25167\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Regent-2.jpg\" alt=\"Regent landslide\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Regent-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Regent-2-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Regent landslide scar, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/sierra-leone-mudslide-270-bodies-recovered-n792741\">NBC \/ Reuters \/ Ernest Henry.<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Even with densely packed housing at the foot of the slope, this level of loss seems surprising to me.\u00a0 I wonder if the images are not capturing a high mobility component of the landslide, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/04\/28\/oso-landslide-new-paper\/\">similar to Oso<\/a>? Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/aug\/15\/sierra-leone-mudslide-flooding-freetown-national-emergency\">the Guardian<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>On the face of it this appears to be a different landslide.\u00a0 But perhaps it is the lower portion of the main Regent landslide, showing evidence of very high mobility and, crucially, the transition into a channelised flow.\u00a0 This would account for the videos of high mobility flows downstream (and reports of bodies being found in the sea), and it would explain how the losses have reached such terrible numbers.<\/p>\n<p>This is of course speculation at the moment, but my sense is that if lessons are to be learnt we need to piece together the dynamics of this disaster properly.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Regent landslide disaster near Freetown in Sierra Leone has killed at least 400 people.
