{"id":25129,"date":"2017-08-13T23:15:41","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T23:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25129"},"modified":"2017-08-13T23:15:41","modified_gmt":"2017-08-13T23:15:41","slug":"kotrupi-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/13\/kotrupi-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Kotrupi: a landslide in northern India kills at least 46 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Kotrupi: a landslide in northern India kills at least 46 people<\/h5>\n<p>On Sunday 13th August 2017 a large landslide struck two buses at Kotrupi (sometimes spelt Kotropi) on National Highway 154, the road between between Mandi and Pathankot in Himachal Pradesh, northern India.\u00a0 As I write, rescue operations are ongoing, but to date 46 people are known to have lost their lives.\u00a0 A small number of people remain missing.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide occurred in a period of extreme monsoon rainfall that has triggered landslides across <a href=\"http:\/\/kathmandupost.ekantipur.com\/news\/2017-08-12\/flood-landslides-30-dead-across-country-home-ministry.html\">a large swathe of the Himalayas<\/a> in India and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrepublica.com\/news\/25548\/\">Nepal<\/a>.\u00a0 News reports that both buses had stopped for a tea break when the landslide occurred a little after midnight.\u00a0 The vehicles were swept 800 m down the slope, and were buried by the debris.<\/p>\n<p>This is the Google Earth image of Kotrupi \/ Kotropi on SH154:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25134\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25134\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25134\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Kotrupi-1-e1502663654949.jpg\" alt=\"Kotrupi landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"384\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of Kotrupi in Himachal Pradesh, India.
