{"id":25065,"date":"2017-08-11T00:07:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T00:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=25065"},"modified":"2017-08-11T19:05:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-11T19:05:26","slug":"jiuzhaigou-earthquake-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/11\/jiuzhaigou-earthquake-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Planet Labs imagery of landslides triggered by the Jiuzhaigou Earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Planet Labs imagery of landslides triggered by the Jiuzhaigou Earthquake<\/h5>\n<p>The private satellite imagery company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planet.com\/\">Planet Labs<\/a> (Planet Team 2017) have very kindly made satellite data available showing the effects of the M=7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake in Sichuan Province, China on 8th August 2017.&nbsp; The impacts are dramatic and extraordinary.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/08\/08\/jiuzhaigou-county-earthquake-1\/\">As I noted in my post immediately after the event<\/a>, we expected that this earthquake would be efficient in terms of landslide generation, and this is indeed the case.<\/p>\n<p>This is a Planet Labs image of the epicentral area collected the day before the earthquake:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25070\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25070\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25070\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Planet-Labs-2-e1502407630448.jpg\" alt=\"Jiuzhaigou earthquake\" width=\"640\" height=\"502\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planet Team (2017) image of the epicentral region of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake, dated 8th August 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>And this is the same area the day after the earthquake:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25072\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25072\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25072\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Planet-Labs-1-e1502407949535.jpg\" alt=\"Jiuzhaigao earthquake\" width=\"640\" height=\"503\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planet Team (2017) image of the epicentral region of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake, dated 9th August 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear that the earthquake has generated a large number of landslides in the epicentral region.&nbsp; These slides appear to have the characteristic form of earthquake induced slides &#8211; there are large numbers in close proximity, many of which extend to the ridge lines.&nbsp; This reflects the effects of topographic amplification in triggering the slides at the ridges, which then travel down to the drainage line, given this landslides a long length relative to their width.&nbsp; Most of the slides appear to be shallow rockslides.<\/p>\n<p>We can get a better understanding of this by zooming in to an area at the top of the image.&nbsp; This is the imagery of before the earthquake on 8th August 2017:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25074\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25074\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25074\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Planet-Labs-3-e1502408589509.jpg\" alt=\"Jiuzhaigiou earthquake\" width=\"640\" height=\"437\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planet Team (2017) imagery of a part of the area affected by the Jiuzhaigou earthquake, dated 8th August 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>And this is the same area a day later:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25079\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25079\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25079\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/08\/17_08-Planet-Labs-4-e1502408812280.jpg\" alt=\"Jiuzhaigou earthquake\" width=\"640\" height=\"437\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planet Team (2017) imagery of part of the epicentral from the Jiuzhaigou earthquake, dated 9th August 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The area affected by landsliding appears to be comparatively compact, as expected for a predominantly strike-slip event of this magnitude.&nbsp; In that area the landslide density is high though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acknowledgement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planet Team (2017).
