Pakistan for the last year.\u00a0 I do not intend to revisit the event here &#8211; I have covered the events of the last 12 months\u00a0 in great detail, but there is a synthesis of the events in the second half of the paper below, which should be downloadable as a pdf:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2011\/01\/10_06-Petley-invited-final1.pdf\">10_06 Petley invited final<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reference is:<\/p>\n<p>Petley, D.N., Rosser, N.J., Karim, D., Wali, S., Ali, N., Nasab, N. and Shaban, K. 2010. (eds) <em>Geologically Active<\/em>.\u00a0 CRC Press, London, pp. 143-154.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the first anniversary is being marked in Pakistan with a number of events, with (rightly or wrongly) the tone being very much dominated by a sense of continued frustration at the local and national government response.\u00a0 Some coverage is provided in a newsy item the <a href=\"http:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/98778\/attabad-disaster-first-anniversary-to-be-observed-today\/\">Express Tribune<\/a> and a more reflective piece in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytimes.com.pk\/default.asp?page=201114\\story_4-1-2011_pg7_18\">Daily Times<\/a>.\u00a0 In Hunza itself today is being described as the &#8220;Black Day&#8221;, with extensive demonstrations planned, although the <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2011\/01\/04\/section-144-imposed-in-hunza-to-stop-black-day-gatherings\/\">Pamir Times reports<\/a> that the demonstrations have been banned.\u00a0 Other demonstrations are planned in Islamabad, but news these have not yet reached the news wires.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, both the chronic and the acute hazards associated with the lake remain.\u00a0 The same <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2011\/01\/04\/section-144-imposed-in-hunza-to-stop-black-day-gatherings\/\">Pamir Times <\/a> article states that boat movements on the lake have been banned for a month, presumably because of the ice, effectively isolating the upstream population once again.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the threat of an outburst flood remains, although we still have no way of knowing how acute this threat actually is at the current time, or in the summer ahead.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today marks the first anniversary of the A|ttabad landslide in Pakistan.
