{"id":24559,"date":"2017-07-04T09:49:15","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T09:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=24559"},"modified":"2017-07-04T09:49:15","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T09:49:15","slug":"la-palma-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/07\/04\/la-palma-1\/","title":{"rendered":"La Palma &#8211; initial images of the &#8220;mega-landslide&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>La Palma &#8211; initial images of the &#8220;mega-landslide&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p>I have spent the last three days on the island of La Palma, principally to represent the <a href=\"http:\/\/sheffield.ac.uk\/\">University of Sheffield<\/a> at the inauguration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/goto-observatory.org\/\">new GOTO telescope<\/a>, yesterday.\u00a0 I was able to take a couple of days over the weekend to visit the site of the famous &#8220;mega-landslide&#8221; that, some people have suggested, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megatsunami\">could create a damaging Atlantic tsunami<\/a> (noting of course that I am, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lapalma-tsunami.com\/tsunami.html\">like many others<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2013\/12\/13\/canary-islands-tsunami\/\">a real skeptic of this theory<\/a>).\u00a0 I have written about this slide &#8211; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lapalma-tsunami.com\/details.html\">rather extreme interpretation<\/a> that is needed to generate the sort of tsunami that has hit the headlines &#8211; previously, but this was the first time I have visited.\u00a0 In the post I will provide some photos of the site; I will then examine the hypothesis in more detail in a subsequent post.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to note is that La Palma is gorgeous, it has been a pleasure to visit.\u00a0 The geology is remarkable too.\u00a0 The hypothesis is that &#8220;mega-landslide&#8221; would involve a huge mass on the southern end of the island slipping to the west.\u00a0 This is a slide on the flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano &#8211; which is fact an elongated volcanic ridge consisting of multiple volcanic cones, some of which date from the 1970s.\u00a0 This is a view along the ridge from the north:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24563\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24563\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24563\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/07\/IMG_9268-e1499160406136.jpg\" alt=\"La Palma\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A view looking south along the Cumbre Vieja ridge (in the distance).
