{"id":2406,"date":"2010-12-05T20:54:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-06T01:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=2406"},"modified":"2010-12-06T04:51:19","modified_gmt":"2010-12-06T09:51:19","slug":"early-reports-of-a-serious-landslide-in-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/12\/05\/early-reports-of-a-serious-landslide-in-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"Early reports of a serious landslide in Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia is currently suffering from exceptional rainfall, inducing widespread flooding and disruption.\u00a0 Yesterday a landslide occurred in the suburbs of Medellin in a very poor settlement called Bello, destroying a number of dwellings.\u00a0 At the moment there appears to be great confusion as to the likely impact of the slide, with the reported number of buried people ranging from <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/americas\/2010\/12\/2010126433109297.html\">50<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5go3gIKZXA6zPDFO5_gwP2owVjPKg?docId=CNG.e49d8f7446a37c4bd9b779af911a7e43.151\">200 or more<\/a>.\u00a0 The local national paper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/\">El Tiempo<\/a>, has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/colombia\/antioquia\/alud-en-antioquia-dejo-treinta-casas-sepultadas_8525520-4\">more considered report<\/a> that includes eye-witness statements.\u00a0 The gist of the article is that the slide destroyed a series of poorly constructed shanty type dwellings, burying the occupants.\u00a0 The images, such as this one from the same source, support that report:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/12\/10_12-Colombia-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2407\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/12\/10_12-Colombia-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"566\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/12\/10_12-Colombia-1.jpg 566w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/12\/10_12-Colombia-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That report also includes two other intriguing nuggets.\u00a0 The first is that the slide initiated in a garbage dump.\u00a0 The images don&#8217;t support or refute this, although there certainly appears to be a substantial amount of earth in the slip.\u00a0 The second is that precursory signs in the form of cracks were observed, and indeed a road was closed before the slide.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia is currently suffering from exceptional rainfall, inducing widespread flooding and disruption.
