{"id":23813,"date":"2017-05-10T06:48:04","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T06:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=23813"},"modified":"2017-05-10T06:48:04","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T06:48:04","slug":"geiranger-fjord-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/05\/10\/geiranger-fjord-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Geiranger Fjord in Norway: the spectacular rockslide video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Geiranger Fjord in Norway: the spectacular rockslide video<\/h5>\n<p>A spectacular video was posted on both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/view?i=720_1494267335\">LiveLeak<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vrX0WRTcxz0\">Youtube<\/a> yesterday showing a rockslide on the flanks of the Geiranger Fjord in Norway on Monday:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vrX0WRTcxz0?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The accompanying text states merely that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;My school went on a Mountain trip when suddenly we heard loud noises. We SAW big blocks of rocks falling down into the Fjord and were amazed by it!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrk.no\/mr\/turistferga-var-like-ved-steinraset-i-geiranger-1.13509183\">NRK has an article (in Norwegian)<\/a> that provides a little more detail, noting that the slide generated a displacement wave about 1 metre high that damaged some docks at Geiranger.\u00a0 The event was registered on the national seismic monitoring network across Norway, suggesting that the volume was not insignificant:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23817\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23817\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23817\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Geiranger-1.png\" alt=\"Geiranger\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Geiranger-1.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Geiranger-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Geiranger-1-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seismic record from the Geiranger Fjord rockslide on Monday, via NRK.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of interesting elements to this rockslide.\u00a0 The first is the timing &#8211;
