{"id":23779,"date":"2017-05-08T07:04:16","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T07:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=23779"},"modified":"2017-05-08T07:04:16","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T07:04:16","slug":"mocoa-landslides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/05\/08\/mocoa-landslides\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mocoa landslides: new satellite images"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Mocoa landslides: new satellite images<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reliefweb.int\/map\/colombia\/landslide-and-debris-flow-detection-mocoa-colombia-28-apr-2017\">ReliefWeb has posted online<\/a> a set of satellite images showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/04\/04\/mocoa-1\/\">Mocoa landslides of 1st April 2017 in Colombia<\/a>.\u00a0 These images were collected by the RapidEye system and made available via Planet Labs Germany GmbH and DLR-RESA. The set consist of an image before the disaster, taken on 21st November 2013:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23785\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23785\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23785\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Mocoa-1-e1494225238798.jpg\" alt=\"Mocoa landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Before image of the area affected by the Mocoa landslides, via GFZ Potsdam and Planet Labs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>An image showing the aftermath, collected on 10th April 2017:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23782\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23782\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23782\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Mocoa-2-e1494225289303.jpg\" alt=\"Mocoa landslides\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image showing the aftermath of the Mocoa landslides, via GFZ Potsdam and Planet Labs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>And an interpretative map that highlights the areas affected by the landslides and debris flows:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23780\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23780\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23780\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Mocoa-3-e1494225366816.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Interpretative map of the area affected by the Mocoa landslides, via GFZ Potsdam and Planet Labs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This work was undertaken by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfz-potsdam.de\/en\/section\/remote-sensing\/staff\/profil\/robert-behling\/\">Dr Robert Behling<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfz-potsdam.de\/en\/section\/remote-sensing\/\">Remote Sensing section of GFZ Potsdam<\/a>.\u00a0 The maps are very interesting.\u00a0 The ReliefWeb article notes that the map depicts over 600 landslides and debris flows.\u00a0 These are widely dispersed across the landscape in a pattern that is commonly associated with a an extreme rainfall event.\u00a0 These landslides have then sent debris into the channels, where they have combined to generate a large volume, which has then entrained debris from within the channels to provide the enormous debris flows that struck the town.\u00a0 The vulnerability of the buildings in the channel of the Quebrada Tarnquita is very clear, and of course this is where the majority of the losses occurred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2017_Mocoa_landslide\">Wikipedia now has a good article<\/a> about the landslides, noting that about 130 mm of rainfall fell during the disaster, which killed 314 people and left a further 106 missing.
