{"id":23713,"date":"2017-05-03T06:23:50","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T06:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=23713"},"modified":"2017-05-03T06:23:50","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T06:23:50","slug":"kurbu-tash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/05\/03\/kurbu-tash\/","title":{"rendered":"Kurbu-Tash and Ayu: the location of the two large landslides in Kyrgyzstan this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Kurbu-Tash landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Yesterday <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/05\/02\/ayu-1\/\">I highlighted a huge landslide that occurred in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/humanitarian-aid-rendered-to-victims-of-landslide-in-uzgen\/\">KABAR has a report today<\/a> that provides details of its location, which is the village of Kurbu-Tash in Uzgen Region.\u00a0 Google Earth has good quality imagery of this area, which reveals why this area was prone to such an event:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23718\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23718\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23718\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Kurbu-Tash-1-e1493790523375.jpg\" alt=\"Kurbu-Tash\" width=\"640\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23718\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the site of the Kurbu-Tash landslide in Kyrgyzstan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>From this perspective, to the right of the village of Kurbu-Tash there is a huge landslide scar extending two thirds of the way up the slope.\u00a0 Interestingly very little of the deposit from this landslide is evident on the imagery, suggesting that the debris has vacated the slope.\u00a0 This may imply a high mobility slide.\u00a0 To the left of the village is another landslide scar, which is much larger but possibly more degraded.\u00a0 The landslide on Sunday, shown below (<a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/humanitarian-aid-rendered-to-victims-of-landslide-in-uzgen\/\">image from KABAR<\/a>) appears to have come from the left side of this area:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23723\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23723\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23723\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Kurbu-Tash-2-e1493791065211.jpg\" alt=\"Kurgu-Tash\" width=\"640\" height=\"351\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Kurbu-Tash landslide in Kyrgyzstan. Image from <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/humanitarian-aid-rendered-to-victims-of-landslide-in-uzgen\/\">KABAR<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h5>The location of the Ayu landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Meanwhile, Elena Nikolaeva kindly contacted me to point out the location of the Ayu landslide, which killed 24 people in Kyrgyzstan on Saturday morning.\u00a0 This appears to be the area shown below, but sadly the image quality of Google Earth is too low to pinpoint it precisely:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23724\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23724\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23724\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Kurbu-Tash-3-e1493791616148.jpg\" alt=\"Kurgu-Tash\" width=\"640\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth imagery of the location of the Ayu landslide in Kyrgyzstan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an area that appears to be quite intensively farmed, but it is unclear as to whether this might have been a factor in the tragedy.<\/p>\n<h5>The government response to these landslide disasters<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/atambayev-instructs-to-resettle-people-from-dangerous-areas\/\">KABAR also reports<\/a> that the President of Kyrgyzstan has ordered a long term response to the tragedy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He noted that the causes and consequences of the disaster indicate that the emergency department needs to strengthen preventive measures, and local authorities to review methods of resettlement of people living in potentially dangerous areas in order to ensure their safety and avoid the severe consequences of natural disasters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is undeniably sensible, but requires a committed, scientifically-based hazard and risk analysis.
