{"id":23683,"date":"2017-05-02T06:52:28","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T06:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=23683"},"modified":"2017-05-02T06:52:28","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T06:52:28","slug":"ayu-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/05\/02\/ayu-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayu in Osh, Kyrgyzstan: a large landslide has killed 24 people, and another large flowslide in Uzgen region"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Ayu in Osh, Kyrgyzstan: a large landslide has killed 24 people<\/h5>\n<p>At 7 am local time in Ayu in the Osh region of Kyrgyzstan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-kyrgyzstan-landslide-idUSKBN17V0C2\">a large landslide swept away and buried 11 houses<\/a>, killing 24 people.\u00a0 The best image of the landslide is available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/sputnik-dozens-feared-to-be-buried-by-massive-landslide-in-south-kyrgyzstan\/\">KABAR website<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23687\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23687\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23687\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Ayu-1-e1493705777817.jpg\" alt=\"Ayu landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The large landslide at Ayu in Osh, which killed 24 people on Saturday. <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/sputnik-dozens-feared-to-be-buried-by-massive-landslide-in-south-kyrgyzstan\/\">Via KABAR<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Once again this looks to be a large, deep-seated landslide in loess.\u00a0 Interesting the main scarp appears to be predominantly translational, but with an unusually deep shear surface.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/sputnik-dozens-feared-to-be-buried-by-massive-landslide-in-south-kyrgyzstan\/\">KABAR<\/a> also has a decent image of the deposit:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23690\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23690\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23690\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/05\/17_05-Ayu-2-e1493706070316.jpg\" alt=\"Ayu landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"351\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The deposit of the Ayu landslide in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. <a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/sputnik-dozens-feared-to-be-buried-by-massive-landslide-in-south-kyrgyzstan\/\">Via KABAR<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This image suggests that this landslide may have been less mobile than <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/04\/18\/almaluu-bulak-landslide-1\/\">many others that we have seen in Kyrgyzstan of late<\/a>.\u00a0 The trigger for this landslide was apparently heavy rainfall.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-kyrgyzstan-landslide-idUSKBN17V0C2\">Reuters reports<\/a> that the local people had been warned of the risks of landslide at this location.<\/p>\n<h5>A massive flowslide in the Uzgen region on Sunday<\/h5>\n<p>Meanwhile an even more impressive, though fortunately less deadly, landslide occurred in the Uzgen region of Kyrgyzstan on Sunday, according to<a href=\"http:\/\/kabar.kg\/eng\/news\/another-landslide-sweeps-over-11-more-houses-in-southern-kyrgyzstan\/\"> KABAR<\/a>.\u00a0 Details are sketchy at present &#8211; it would be interesting to see the headscarp area,<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgyzstan appears to be suffering a spate of large landslides this year; the reasons are unclear.\u00a0 They beautifully illustrate the role of material properties in defining the behaviour of the landslide.\u00a0 In the case of these slides in Kyrgyzstan, the presence of loess leads to these repeated flowslide events that show high mobility, with resultant heavy losses.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two large landslides occurred in Kyrgystan this weekend.
