Wellington earthquake landslide problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Wellington earthquake landslide problem<\/h5>\n<p>The Wellington earthquake landslide problem was the front page story in one of the local papers 10 days ago.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/91391365\/10000-wellington-homes-could-be-damaged-by-landslides-in-big-earthquake\">The article is online<\/a>.\u00a0 The crux of the piece is summarised in the first few sentences:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Up to 10,000 Wellington homes could be damaged by landslides if a major\u00a0earthquake\u00a0strikes\u00a0close to the city.\u00a0 But while landslides may pose the greatest threat to those living in the capital when the big one hits,\u00a0it could be years before residents know which slopes across the city pose the highest risk.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article also highlights a study being undertaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gns.cri.nz\/Home\/Our-Science\/Natural-Hazards\/Landslides\">GNS Science<\/a> to try to understand the risks associated with the Wellington earthquake landslide problem:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GNS engineering geologist Sally Dellow said earthquake-induced landslides were usually bigger than those caused by rain.\u00a0 A research project was already under way looking at modified slopes in the Wellington region, she said.\u00a0 Homeowners could expect slopes around them to be evaluated, but it would take extra funding of about $5 million for the work to be completed in four years.\u00a0 &#8220;GNS Science has been working on this problem for many years, but only recently has the work started to be funded to the level required to deliver the detail needed to give information that can be acted upon.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A part of the issue here is that the Wellington Fault runs at the foot of a series of steep slopes very close to the city centre.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.leapfrog3d.com\/2014\/05\/20\/new-zealand-the-shaky-isles\/\">Leapfrog blog has a rather lovely image<\/a> that captures this efature well:<\/p>\n<div blog<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>As the image above shows, there are many houses built on the slopes around the city.\u00a0 I snapped a couple of pictures before I left on Saturday:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23607\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8938-e1493015116215.jpg\" alt=\"Wellington elsewhere in New Zealand and further afield that, in general, slopes close to the surface traces of faults perform badly in earthquakes.\u00a0 The Kaikoira earthquake illustrates this quite large numbers of cracked and deformed slopes close to the fault that have not transitioned to full failure.\u00a0 These deformations are sufficiently large to damage houses very badly though.\u00a0 This is an image I took from a helicpter after the 2005 Pakistan earthquake:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23615\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" The change in colour in the rocks that is so obvious in the image marks the line of the fault.\u00a0 The terrible landslide problem close to the fault is very clear.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>It isn&#8217;t possible to say how the slopes will behave in an earthquake in Wellington, and no-one is suggesting that any particular property is at risk.\u00a0 But it is clear that the work that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gns.cri.nz\/Home\/Our-Science\/Natural-Hazards\/Landslides\">GNS Science<\/a> and others are doing on the Wellington earthquake landslide problem is both timely and important.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago a newspaper in New Zealand highlighted the potential Wellington earthquake landslide problem.
