The recent passage of Hurricane Tomas across St Lucia, about which I have posted previously<\/a>, has left a trail of destruction that has been surprisingly under-reported in the mainstream media.\u00a0 There are some dramatic pictures of the impact of the storm on this blog<\/a>.\u00a0 Emerging from the wreckage is a very human story of the destructive nature of landslides.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Livity Art Studio (pictured above)\u00a0was a popular tourist destination on the island.\u00a0 It is featured in a number of web pages – for example\u00a0this site<\/a>, which is also the source of the image.\u00a0 The studio is described on that web page as follows:<\/p>\n

“Livity Art Studio is a family run business with a lovely roadside shop in Colombette, Soufriere. Husband and wife team, Sabi and Eugenia work alongside their in-house artist \u2018Edge\u2019 and together they create an exciting range of art and art-crafts.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When Tomas struck the studio was occupied by the owners, Sabi and\u00a0Eugenia (photographed\u00a0above to the left\u00a0– image from here<\/a>), their two children and the resident artist ‘Edge’.\u00a0 It appears that\u00a0during the storm the studio was struck\u00a0by a landslide\u00a0.\u00a0 The One Little House <\/a>blog has an image that reportedly shows\u00a0the landslide (above right) ( note – I have no way to verify whether this is the case, and am not sure where the buildings were – maybe bottom right?).\u00a0 Tragically, all five occupants of the house were killed and the studio was destroyed.\u00a0 The bodies have been recovered.<\/p>\n

There are several websites seeking to remember these five obviously very popular residents of St Lucia – see here for example<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0When presenting objective statistics about the impact of natural disasters – such as my post yesterday <\/a>– it is very easy to forget the very real human story that underpins the numbers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
