The\u00a0original\u00a0and some would say best landslide video\u00a0is of that of the April 1978 Rissa landslide in Norway.\u00a0 I have mentioned this slide before<\/a> – and indeed have hosted a link to the video, although that link is now dead.\u00a0 In looking for background material for the amazing\u00a0 Port Chibatao <\/a>landslide in Manaus (if you haven’t looked at that video then you are really missing out)\u00a0I found that the section of the original documentary is now available online<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Server site has a brief summary of the landslide here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The landslide, which\u00a0had a volume of 5 to 6 million cubic metres, was triggered by a small excavation for the foundation of a barn, and in particular by the emplacement of placement of the soil that was excavated as\u00a0a berm at the edge of Lake Vatnen.\u00a0 This is reminiscent in many ways of the Manaus event, which was reportedly triggered by a mechanical\u00a0excavator.\u00a0 The slide moved over a period of less than 10 minutes.\u00a0 Fortunately, only a single person died.<\/p>\n

As an aside the commentary of the video is wonderful.\u00a0 It is a great shame that no-one speaks\u00a0in that way\u00a0anymore!<\/p>\n
