{"id":22317,"date":"2017-03-17T09:40:47","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T09:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=22317"},"modified":"2017-03-17T09:42:11","modified_gmt":"2017-03-17T09:42:11","slug":"koshe-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2017\/03\/17\/koshe-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Koshe, Ethiopia: the worst garbage dump landslide in recent years"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Koshe, Ethiopia: the worst garbage dump landslide in recent years<\/h5>\n<p>The death toll from the terrible garbage dump landslide at Koshe in Ethiopia on Saturday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africareview.com\/news\/Ethiopia-rubbish-dump-landslide-death-toll-\/979180-3851950-107ybg0z\/\">is now known to have reached 115<\/a>, with fears that more bodies may remain buried.\u00a0 The landslide occurred on Saturday when a section of the dump collapsed onto a slum built at the toe of the slope.\u00a0 The majority of fatalities are reported to be women and children.\u00a0 The most-informative set of images can be found in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dozens-killed-in-ethiopia-garbage-dump-landslide\/\">CBS News article<\/a> from a few days ago, including the image below of the crown of the landslide, which suggests that the crown of the landslide has a rotational component:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22339\" style=\"width: 628px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22339\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22339\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-1.jpg\" alt=\"Koshe\" width=\"618\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-1.jpg 618w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The crown of the Koshe landslide in Ethiopia, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/ethiopia-garbage-dump-collapse\/7\/\">CBS News and ZACHARIAS ABUBEKER\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>From this image the landslide looks to be a comparatively simple failure in an oversteepened slope.\u00a0 The image below, also via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dozens-killed-in-ethiopia-garbage-dump-landslide\/\">CBS News<\/a>, shows the rescue operations further down the slope, which indicates that the lower reaches of the landslide may have behaved as an earthflow.\u00a0 Again, this is not unexpected:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22353\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22353\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22353\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-2.jpg\" alt=\"Koshe\" width=\"612\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-2.jpg 612w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2017\/03\/17_04-Koshe-2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The lower reaches of the Koshe garbage dumpl landslide, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/ethiopia-garbage-dump-collapse\/4\/\">CBS News and REUTERS\/Tiksa Negeri TPX Images of the Day<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.africareview.com\/news\/Ethiopia-rubbish-dump-landslide-death-toll-\/979180-3851950-107ybg0z\/\">Africa Review has a good article<\/a> on the possible causes of the landslide:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The people of Koshe lived in squalor of a degree that is uncommon in the city of four million people.\u00a0 Last year, the government tried to close the landfill and move it to a new location, but opposition from people living near the new site forced authorities to reverse their decision.<\/p>\n<p>Addis Ababa&#8217;s construction boom didn&#8217;t leave Koshe untouched;
