The theme of the conference is &#8220;Geologically Active&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, what do we know about the earthquake so far.&nbsp; The best source of information is the Geonet site &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonet.org.nz\/\">http:\/\/www.geonet.org.nz\/ <\/a>&#8211; which puts seismic data online in real time.&nbsp; They are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonet.org.nz\/earthquake\/quakes\/3366146g.html\">reporting<\/a> that the earthquake occurred at 4:35 am local time 30 km west of Christchurch at a depth of (now updated to) 10 km.&nbsp; The reported magnitude is (now updated to) 7.1 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/recenteqsww\/Quakes\/us2010atbj.php\">USGS is reporting<\/a> 7.0, but this is probably a moment magnitude.&nbsp; This is the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonet.org.nz\/earthquake\/quakes\/3366146g-maps.html\"> isoseismal map<\/a> from Geonet:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_09-nz-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_09-nz-1.png\" width=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This suggests that some damage in the Christchurch area is likely, which seems to be confirmed by the initial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5gLE5Mss9oMr_dpRNOuQ19HacFrRQD9I0KQB80\">news reports<\/a>.&nbsp; Hopefully the timing of the earthquake, and the high level of preparation for earthquakes in New Zealand, will mean that casualties will be light and damage manageable.&nbsp; Perhaps the most interesting data at this stage is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonet.org.nz\/earthquake\/quakes\/3366146g-shaking.html\">map of locations in which people have reported they felt the earthquake<\/a>.&nbsp;
