{"id":20772,"date":"2016-12-19T08:30:36","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T08:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=20772"},"modified":"2016-12-19T08:30:36","modified_gmt":"2016-12-19T08:30:36","slug":"big-french-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/12\/19\/big-french-creek\/","title":{"rendered":"Big French Creek: a high quality new landslide video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Big French Creek: a high quality new landslide video<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.krcrtv.com\/north-coast-news\/eureka-news\/trinity\/caught-on-camera-rock-slide-closes-highway-299w-at-big-french-creek\/208263574\">KRCRTV featured last week<\/a> a very nice new landslide video of a collapse that occurred on Highway 299W at Big French Creek in California.\u00a0 The landslide happened last Monday (12th December 2017) at about 1 pm.\u00a0 As you will see from the video the road was closed.\u00a0 The video was captured by Kevin Erwin.\u00a0 It is a great catch in that it records the minute or so leading up to the failure, as well as the movement of the large boulder that is located within the weather rock mass.\u00a0 Kevin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E0iqU4c1Whk\">loaded the video onto Youtube<\/a>, so it can be sen below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E0iqU4c1Whk\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The same event was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HX9YDuHxF40\">captured by J2R2J<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HX9YDuHxF40\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Irving kindly highlighted this video to me.\u00a0 He has identified the location as 40.779, -123.311, which looks like this on Google Maps:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20775\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20775\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20775\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/12\/16_12-Big-French-Creek-1-e1482134688417.jpg\" alt=\"Big French Creek\" width=\"640\" height=\"506\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landslide at Big French Creek via Google Maps<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of work crews suggests that the highway agency were aware that the slope was problematic, and it is clear that the road had been closed prior to the collapse.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.ca.gov\/hq\/roadinfo\/display.php?page=sr299\">Latest news from Caltrans<\/a> is that the road is still closed:<\/p>\n<pre>SR 299\r\n    [IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]\r\n    IS CLOSED 4.5 MI WEST OF BIG BAR \/AT BIG FRENCH CREEK\/ (TRINITY CO) 24 HRS\r\nA DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK THRU THE WEEK OF 01\/08\/17 - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN\r\nALTERNATE ROUTE<\/pre>\n<h5>Renewed problems at Pacifica<\/h5>\n<p>Meanwhile Pasi Jokela has kindly highlighted a renewed problem at Pacifica to the south of San Francisco, where coastal erosion is causing increasing problems for a coastal community.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/view?i=f89_1482023168\"> Liveleak has a nice drone video<\/a> of a &#8220;sinkhole&#8221; that has appeared on the cliff.\u00a0 This is a fill slope located behind a sea wall &#8211; it seems on first inspection that the fill has washed out:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.liveleak.com\/ll_embed?f=1762e1e34d09\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The video also highlights a number of other properties that are at a high level of risk from erosion.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/Erosion-Causes-Dangerous-Sinkhole-on-Cliff-in-Pacifica--405971835.html\">NBC Bay Area<\/a> has a decent report about the problem.\u00a0 I have <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/02\/03\/muothatal\/\">previously featured the ongoing problems at Pacifica<\/a>, including another very nice drone video of the site.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week a rockslide on Highway 299W at Big French Creek in California was caught on video.
