{"id":20595,"date":"2016-12-02T08:05:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-02T08:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=20595"},"modified":"2016-12-02T08:05:31","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T08:05:31","slug":"north-canterbury-landslide-dams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/12\/02\/north-canterbury-landslide-dams\/","title":{"rendered":"The North Canterbury Landslide Dams website"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The North Canterbury Landslide Dams website<\/h5>\n<p>The aftermath of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/11\/28\/m7-8-kaikoura-earthquake\/\">Kaikoura Earthquake<\/a> last month is increasingly becoming focused on the impact of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/national\/319411\/scientists-count-150-landslides-into-kaikoura-waterways\">very large number (possibly over 80,000) landslides<\/a> generated by the seismic event.\u00a0 In common with other major earthquakes in mountainous areas, the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/national\/319413\/landslide-dams-watched-closely-for-flood-risk\"> immediate concern is focused upon valley blocking landslides<\/a> &#8211; also known as landslide dams or quake lakes.\u00a0 A small proportion of these can collapse rapidly, allowing the generation of a major flood \/ debris flow that can be devastating downstream.\u00a0 Unsurprisingly, the Kaikoura earthquake has generated a large number of landslide dams, although none pose an immediate high level of risk.\u00a0 The potentially more dangerous dams are being monitored by Environment Canterbury and GNS Science.\u00a0 My old friend Sally Dellow is providing much of the technical coordination; I know of no-one better to play this vital role.<\/p>\n<p>Canterbury Maps have now put together a wonderful web resource to provide information about the landslide dams &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/ecan.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=50f00d42e29c46b1a61b848440c5295a\">North Canterbury Landslide Dams<\/a> &#8211; this is exemplary risk communication.\u00a0 The site provides an interactive map of the location of the landslide dams, with the key dams being highlighted in red:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20597\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20597\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20597\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/12\/16_12-NCLD-1-e1480664961575.jpg\" alt=\"North Canterbury Landslide Dams\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/ecan.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=50f00d42e29c46b1a61b848440c5295a\">North Canterbury Landslide Dams<\/a> map of the major valley blocking landslides after the Kaikoura earthquake<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The site provides a table of information about the status of the key landslide dams as well, which will be updated as each reconnaissance flight is completed.\u00a0 For example, one of the dams, Linton 340, is described as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dam remains intact, but face starting to erode. High chance of failure.
