{"id":20509,"date":"2016-11-20T00:05:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-20T00:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=20509"},"modified":"2016-11-20T00:05:32","modified_gmt":"2016-11-20T00:05:32","slug":"geonet-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/11\/20\/geonet-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Geonet commentary on landslides triggered by the Kaikoura Earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Geonet commentary on landslides triggered by the Kaikoura Earthquake<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/info.geonet.org.nz\/display\/quake\/2016\/11\/18\/Landslides+and+Landslide+dams+caused+by+the+Kaikoura+Earthquake\">Geonet has now posted<\/a> an initial commentary on the landslides triggered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/11\/17\/hapuku-river-1\/\">Kaikoura earthquake<\/a> in New Zealand a week ago.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t seek to reproduce what they have stated, but the headlines are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There are between 80,000 and 100,000 landslides over an area of about 7,000 square kilometres.<\/li>\n<li>Based on an initial analysis of a new Worldview-2 satellite image there are 12 valley blocking landslides (landslide dams).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many of these are likely to have breached naturally already, but all need assessment to this end, <a href=\"http:\/\/info.geonet.org.nz\/display\/quake\/2016\/11\/18\/Landslides+and+Landslide+dams+caused+by+the+Kaikoura+Earthquake\">Geonet state that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GNS has also started systematically flying landslide affected areas to visually identify landslide dammed lakes. The southeast flank of the Seaward Kaikouras, was flown on the 16<sup>th<\/sup> November and seven landslide dams were found. These flights will continue over the next three or four days. The purpose of these flights is to systematically cover affected areas where no data is currently available. The second purpose is to photograph the landslide dams to allow assessment of the hazard at each site.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The have provided a map of some of these landslide dams:<\/p>\n<div posting<\/a> a series of videos showing aspects of the damage caused by the earthquake.\u00a0 The Youtube channel can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCpltVlIiaSlsFJdg9j5Af6g\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Some of the landslides are impressive.\u00a0 I particularly recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XkaNMhjeuF4\">Waipapa Landslide video<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XkaNMhjeuF4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very deep seated slump on an unusually large scale:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20513\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QAUY66CHlXU\">nice video<\/a> of a large, complex and quite long runout landslide on the Leader River:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" scale of this valley blocking landslide, this image shows the vast number of additional landslides triggered by the earthquake.\u00a0 Experience from elsewhere suggests that this number will increase
