{"id":20408,"date":"2016-11-13T10:05:29","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T10:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=20408"},"modified":"2016-11-13T10:05:29","modified_gmt":"2016-11-13T10:05:29","slug":"asakveien-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/11\/13\/asakveien-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Asakveien: a deadly quick clay landslide in Norway on Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Asakveien: a deadly quick clay landslide in Norway on Friday<\/h5>\n<p>On Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/11\/11\/st-luc-de-vincennes-1\/\">I posted about a dramatic quick clay landslide<\/a> in Canada at the end of last week, which fortunately did not lead to loss of life.\u00a0 Sadly, late on Thursday afternoon another event occurred, this time at Asakveien in S\u00f8rum municipality in Norway, with a much higher cost.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aftenposten.no\/norge\/Tre-litauere-antatt-omkommet-i-jordras-i-Sorum-kommune-608807b.html\">Aftenposten has a detailed article<\/a> about the landslide, and its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aftenposten.no\/norge\/De-tre-savnede-etter-ras-fremdeles-ikke-funnet---politiet-har-overvaket-omradet-med-nattkikkerter-608824b.html\">consequences<\/a>, in Norwegian, but Google Translate does a pretty good job (with some minor edits by me):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"notranslate\">At 5:45 pm on Thursday afternoon, the police received police notification that a mudslide had occurred in Asakveien in S\u00f8rum municipality, near a climbing park.\u00a0 The landslide has a width of 400 meters and was almost 300 meters long.\u00a0 Six forestry workers who work on a nearby farm were in the area where the landslide occurred.\u00a0 Three of them escaped and reported to the police that three colleagues are missing.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It has now been accepted that the three missing men, all from Lithuania, have lost their lives, although the most recent reports suggest that their bodies have not been recovered as yet.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aftenposten.no\/norge\/De-tre-savnede-etter-ras-fremdeles-ikke-funnet---politiet-har-overvaket-omradet-med-nattkikkerter-608824b.html\">newspaper images<\/a> show that this is another classic quick clay landslide:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20410\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20410\" class=\"wp-image-20410 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/11\/16_11-Norway-1-e1479029506890.jpg\" alt=\"Asakveien landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The quick clay landslide at Asakveien in S\u00f8rum municipality, Norway, courtesy of Aftenposten and Hans O.
