a major developing post-glacial rockslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Aletsch: a major developing glacial rockslide<\/h5>\n<p>Both Juy Bullot and Eric Bardou (many thanks to them) have alerted me to a very interesting major rockslide developing in the Aletsch region of Switzerland.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rts.ch\/play\/tv\/19h30\/video\/19h30?id=8049627\">Reports<\/a> about the slide are only in French as far as I can tell, but this is a most interesting landslide.<\/p>\n<p>The slide itself is at Moosfluh in the Riederalp, Canton du Valais, above the left flank if the Aletsch Glacier.\u00a0 This is a Google Earth image of the site, although note that the image is seven years old:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19947\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption article on the landslide (in French of course).\u00a0 this is my translation, with help from Google because I&#8217;m lazy!,:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Dangers naturels - Un glissement de terrain \u00e0 Moosfluh, en rive gauche du glacier d\u2019Aletsch, s\u2019est fortement acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 au cours des derni\u00e8res semaines.\"> A landslide in Moosfluh on the left bank of the Aletsch glacier has greatly accelerated in recent weeks. <\/span><span title=\"Les chemins p\u00e9destres dans le secteur concern\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ferm\u00e9s par la commune de Riederalp avec l\u2019appui du canton. \">The hiking trails in the sector have been closed by the municipality of Riederalp with support from the canton.\u00a0 <\/span><span title=\"De tr\u00e8s nombreuses fissures et quelques chutes de pierres ont \u00e9t\u00e9 observ\u00e9es \u00e0 Moosfluh, en rive gauche du glacier d\u2019Aletsch.\">Numerous cracks and a few rockfalls have been observed at Moosfluh on the left bank of the Aletsch glacier. <\/span><span title=\"Le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est actuellement monitor\u00e9 dans les moindres d\u00e9tails.\">The phenomenon is being monitored in detail. <\/span><span title=\"La surface concern\u00e9e repr\u00e9sente environ 1 km2.\">The area concerned is about 1 square kilometre. <\/span><span title=\"La masse en mouvement d\u2019un volume sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 200 millions de m3 se d\u00e9place de plus de 20 cm par jour. \">The moving mass has a volume of more than 200 million cubic metres and is moving more than 20 cm per day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Un effondrement rapide de l\u2019ensemble de la masse semble \u00e0 ce stade tr\u00e8s peu probable, communique mardi l'Etat du Valais.\">A rapid collapse of the entire mass seems at this stage very unlikely. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They have this image of the site:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19948\" style=\"width: href=\"http:\/\/www.rhonefm.ch\/fr\/news\/glissement-de-terrain-au-glacier-d-aletsch-appel-a-la-prudence-671957\">Rhone FM<\/a> has a view from a different angle:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19952\" FM<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a wonderful opportunity to study the development of\u00a0 progressive failure in a large rockslope.\u00a0 Predicting the time of failure is fraught with difficulty, and it is good that no bold forecasts are being made at this stage.\u00a0 A particularly interesting aspect of this landslide is that its location is close to the terminus of the retreating Aletsch Glacier.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aletsch_Glacier\">Wikipedia reports<\/a> that in some years this glacier is retreating at 100 m per year.\u00a0 It has long been hypothesised that major rockslides may be more likely when slopes are debuttressed by glacial retreat.\u00a0 That may be the case here.<\/p>\n<h5>Other posts on a similar
