{"id":19886,"date":"2016-09-28T06:30:52","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T06:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=19886"},"modified":"2016-09-28T00:28:59","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T00:28:59","slug":"rizhao-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/09\/28\/rizhao-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Rizhao rockslide: a narrow escape in a new public park in Shandong, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Rizhao rockslide in Shangdong<\/h5>\n<p>The city of Rizhao in Shangdong, Eastern China has had an exceptionally lucky escape this week when a rockslide occurred in a new public park, shortly before it was due to open.\u00a0 The location is Phoenix Mountain in the centre of the city; the Park was due to open &#8220;later this month&#8221;.\u00a0 The rockslide itself is somewhat dramatic, as this image from <a href=\"https:\/\/thenanfang.com\/landslide-decimates-shandong-park-prior-public-opening\/\">The Nanfang<\/a> shows:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19887\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19887\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19887\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/09\/16_09-shandong-1-e1475018173312.jpg\" alt=\"rizhao rockslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"409\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rockslide at Rizhao in Shandong, via <a href=\"https:\/\/thenanfang.com\/landslide-decimates-shandong-park-prior-public-opening\/\">The Nanfang<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>A view of the rockslide from a different angle looks no less dramatic:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19890\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19890\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19890\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/09\/16_09-shandong-2-e1475018356625.jpg\" alt=\"Rizhao rockslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"408\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rockslide at Rizhao in Shandong, via <a href=\"https:\/\/thenanfang.com\/landslide-decimates-shandong-park-prior-public-opening\/\">The Nanfang<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, this slope had been turned into a rock climbing facility, and the area to the right of the landslide shows evidence of extensive slope engineering.\u00a0 I assume that this extended into the area that has failed, although\u00a0 it is not possible to say what it looked like.\u00a0 The failure itself appears to have been structurally controlled.\u00a0 Note the very large boulder sizes.\u00a0 Needless to say, if this landslide had occurred a month later the impact could have been very dramatic, with losses on the slope, in the park and in the parking area.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/thenanfang.com\/landslide-decimates-shandong-park-prior-public-opening\/\">The article<\/a> makes some interesting observations about cause:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Zhang Bao, director of Lanshan District emergency services,\u00a0said a preliminary investigation has determined that the landslide was a natural phenomenon, and not man made.
