{"id":19853,"date":"2016-09-22T06:30:54","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T06:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=19853"},"modified":"2016-09-21T20:56:48","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T20:56:48","slug":"wye-river-landslides-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/09\/22\/wye-river-landslides-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Wye River: landslides in the aftermath of a forest fire in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Wye River: landslides in the aftermath of a forest fire in Australia<\/h5>\n<p>The small town of Wye River, on the coast of Victoria in the southeast corner of Australia, suffered devastating forest fires in the summer of 2015.\u00a0 Wye River itself lost 98 homes &#8211; one third of the town &#8211; and a further 18 were lost in nearby Separation Creek.\u00a0 Over Christmas last year a desperate battle was fought to save the remainder of the town, successfully, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/great-ocean-road-fires-wye-river-firefighters-touted-as-unsung-heroes\/news-story\/d2f86dca787fe7101534415b27883e77\">images of the aftermath remain horrifying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19854\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19854\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19854\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/09\/16_09-Wye-River-1-e1474489736662.jpg\" alt=\"Wye River\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The aftermath of the Wye River fire, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/great-ocean-road-fires-wye-river-firefighters-touted-as-unsung-heroes\/news-story\/d2f86dca787fe7101534415b27883e77\">Herald Sun<\/a> and Aaron Francis<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>A well documented hazard in the aftermath of a large fire is the potential for increased landslides.\u00a0 Last week this area suffered heavy rainfall, triggering multiple landslides along the Great Ocean Road, which passes through the town (and can be seen in the image above).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/victoria\/great-ocean-road-fear-for-more-landslides-as-communities-suffer-amid-road-closures-20160921-grkz9r.html\">More than 150 landslides and rockfalls<\/a> have been reported along the road in the last three weeks, and the highway remains severely restricted:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19857\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19857\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19857\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/09\/16_09-Wye-River-2-e1474490063725.jpg\" alt=\"Wye River\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A landslide on the Great Ocean Road near Wye River, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1001ptsAU\/status\/778336011021651969\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc^tfw\">via Twitter<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The most serious issue though is situated between Wye River and Separation Creek, where a landslide of about 1,000 cubic metres has developed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colacherald.com.au\/2016\/09\/ocean-road-towns-landslide-watch\/\">opening a large tension crack<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Paddy\u2019s Path was impacted by a 35-metre tension crack and is posing a very significant landslip risk,\u201d\u00a0the EMV said, after VicRoads engineers inspected the path between Wye River and Separation Creek on Thursday.\u00a0 Wye River General Store\u2019s Shaun McKinlay said the situation was \u201call too familiar\u201d for residents, who faced the isolation of road closures, and the worry of not knowing what was going to happen next for the second time in less than 10 months.\u00a0 Mr McKinlay said on Friday he understood the crack becoming a landslide was an \u201cevent that\u2019s going to happen, they just don\u2019t know when\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a GGoogle Earth image of the location of Paddy&#8217;s Path in Wye River:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19861\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19861\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19861\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/09\/16_09-Wye-River-3-e1474490415530.jpg\" alt=\"Wye River\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth image of the location of the Wye River landslide.
