{"id":19400,"date":"2016-08-03T06:52:50","date_gmt":"2016-08-03T06:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=19400"},"modified":"2016-08-03T06:56:38","modified_gmt":"2016-08-03T06:56:38","slug":"lords-rake-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/08\/03\/lords-rake-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Collapse of the Lord&#8217;s Rake boulder in the English Lake District"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Collapse of the Chockstone boulder at the Lord&#8217;s Rake in the English Lake District<\/h5>\n<p>The Lord&#8217;s Rake in the Lake District is a famous steep gully that leads up to the Scafell Pike plateau, popular with climbers in this the most beautiful part of England.\u00a0 Part of the challenge is the presence of scree through the gully, generated by thousands of rockfalls.\u00a0 For well over a decade the route has been characterised by a very large boulder, known as the Chockstone, which detached from one of the rock walls near to the summit in 2001, and became wedged across the gully:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19401\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19401\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19401\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-Lords-Rake-1.jpg\" alt=\"Lord's Rake\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-Lords-Rake-1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-Lords-Rake-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chockstone on the Lord&#8217;s Rake prior to the collapse, via <a href=\"http:\/\/allthegearbutnoidea.blogspot.co.uk\/2015\/05\/scafell-slight-side-via-lords-rake-and.html\">All the Gear But No Idea<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmrt.org.uk\/2016\/08\/lords-rake-update\/\">Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team reported <\/a>that the Chockstone has collapsed and disintegrated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The perched block at the top of Lords Rake has fragmented and is now in bits close to where it was stuck. There are some loose boulders where it was standing. The largest bit looks to be fairly well bedded into the scree.
