{"id":19376,"date":"2016-08-01T07:34:29","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T07:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=19376"},"modified":"2016-08-01T07:56:10","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T07:56:10","slug":"2016-landslide-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/08\/01\/2016-landslide-losses\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 landslide losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>2016 landslide losses<\/h5>\n<p>We are now in the peak season for landslides globally as both the Asian monsoon and the typhoon season reach full power.\u00a0 I posted late last week about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/07\/29\/2016-monsoon-1\/\">impacts of the monsoon in South Asia<\/a>, especially in Nepal.\u00a0 To date the typhoon season in the West Pacific has not been particularly powerful, but in the next 24 hours a major storm (Tropical Cyclone Nida) will make landfall in South China.\u00a0 The current track suggests that it will be a direct hit on Hong Kong, which could be interesting.\u00a0 Fortunately this is not a very powerful storm, and it is reasonably fast moving:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19377\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19377\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19377\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-HK-1-e1470034954832.png\" alt=\"2016 landslide losses\" width=\"590\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-HK-1-e1470034954832.png 590w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/08\/16_08-HK-1-e1470034954832-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hko.gov.hk\/contente.htm\">Hong Kong Observatory track forecast<\/a> for Typhoon Nida<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless this has the potential to generate reasonable amounts of rainfall, so there may be a real landslide risk.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hko.gov.hk\/wxinfo\/rainfall\/isohyet_p24e.shtml\">Hong Kong Observatory rainfall maps<\/a> will be worth following for the next two days or so.<\/p>\n<p>I thought this would be a good time to reflect on 2016 landslide losses to date, and to compare those with 2015.\u00a0 The graph below shows the number of fatality-inducing landslide that I have recorded in 2016 compared with the full year distribution for 2015.\u00a0 Remember that we had thought that 2015 would might a bad year due to the El Nino conditions.\u00a0 This did not turn out to be the case &#8211;
