{"id":188,"date":"2010-03-23T05:26:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T05:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/03\/23\/the-haiti-tsunami\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:35:58","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:35:58","slug":"the-haiti-tsunami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/03\/23\/the-haiti-tsunami\/","title":{"rendered":"The Haiti tsunami"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ei.columbia.edu\/\">State of the Planet blog<\/a>, which is the blog of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ei.columbia.edu\/blog\/2010\/03\/15\/an-underwater-landslide-then-a-deadly-wave\/\">reports on an ongoing investigation<\/a> of the tsunami that killed a small number of people to the west of Port-au-Prince (image below from the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2010\/02\/100223-haiti-earthquake-tsunamis-swarm\/\">National Geographic<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_03-haiti-tsunami.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px;text-align: center;cursor: pointer;width: 400px;height: 300px\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_03-haiti-tsunami.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The research has involved drilling cores into the sediment on the sea floor near to the tsunami.  Their initial analysis suggests that the tsunami was caused by a lateral spread near to the coastline, which released a flow down the offshore slope into deeper water.
