{"id":18284,"date":"2016-04-12T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=18284"},"modified":"2016-04-12T07:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T07:00:00","slug":"the-renfrew-county-landslide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/04\/12\/the-renfrew-county-landslide\/","title":{"rendered":"The 29th March 2016 Renfrew County landslide near to Ottawa, Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Renfrew County Landslide<\/h5>\n<p>At about 2 am on 29th March 2016 the Renfrew County landslide occurred near to Horton Township, west of Ottawa in Canada.\u00a0 This landslide, which is reported to have had a surface area of 10 hectares, slipped into and blocked the Bonnechere River.\u00a0 Various <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insideottawavalley.com\/news-story\/6424415-horton-township-landslide-sends-debris-into-bonnechere-ottawa-rivers\/\">local news agencies<\/a> have images, of which the best overview is on the <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/renfrew-county-landslide-10-hectares-vanish-overnight\">Ottawa Citizen<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18287\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18287\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/04\/16_04-Renfrew-1-e1460442465966.jpeg\" alt=\"Renfrew County landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Renfrew County landslide via the <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/renfrew-county-landslide-10-hectares-vanish-overnight\">Ottawa Citizen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The level of the impounded water rose by 7 m, damaging a cottage, a hunting camp and a hydroelectic plant, amongst other impacts.\u00a0 After about seven hours the dam breached, releasing a flow at a rate of about 250 cumecs (cubic metres per second).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/renfrew-county-landslide-10-hectares-vanish-overnight\">Ottawa Citizen report<\/a> also carries a brief interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Gregory_Brooks\">Greg Brooks<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/home\">Natural Resources Canada<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are definitely ancient, large landslides that are mapped in that area,\u201d said Greg Brooks, a landslide expert with Natural Resources Canada. \u201cThis is another one&#8230;You can\u2019t stop them. When they\u2019re going to happen, they\u2019re going to happen.\u201d\u00a0 He said the land includes a lot of leda clay \u2014 the former bottom\u00a0of the ancient Champlain Sea, which is prone to collapsing suddenly, especially when it is sodden.
