{"id":17744,"date":"2016-02-10T06:21:27","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T06:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=17744"},"modified":"2016-02-10T06:21:27","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T06:21:27","slug":"fude-village-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/02\/10\/fude-village-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Fude Village, China: six killed in a rockslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Fude Village rockslide<\/h5>\n<p>Early on Monday morning a rockslide occurred at Fude Village in Du&#8217;an Yao Autonomous County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in the south of China.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2016-02\/08\/c_135085021.htm\">Chinese news agency Xinhua<\/a> has a report and images off the landslide, which it describes as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The emergency response office in Du&#8217;an Yao Autonomous County under Hechi city received information at 3:25 a.m. Monday that a two-story building in Fude village collapsed in a landslide.\u00a0 Lan Min [a] villager, was sleeping when the accident happened. Image via <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2016-02\/08\/c_135085021.htm\">Xinhua<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of things that are interesting here.\u00a0 First, the location of the original rockfall is clear.\u00a0 The volume of the debris at the toe of the slope looks to be substantial (although some may originate from earlier rockfall events), suggesting that the landslide entrained other debris en route down the slope.\u00a0 Second, note that the scar from the source of the rockfall is heavily discoloured compared with the freshly fractured rock downslope.\u00a0 This suggests that the rockfall originated from a pre-existing joint or fracture.\u00a0 The news reports suggest that this was not triggered by rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>The deaths occurred in a single property that was impacted by the debris.\u00a0 The damage to the house is dreadful:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17746\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17746\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17746\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/02\/16_02-China-2-e1455084883616.jpg\" alt=\"Fude village rockslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"387\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The house destroyed by the rockslide at Fude village Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.
