{"id":17354,"date":"2016-01-09T09:15:53","date_gmt":"2016-01-09T09:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=17354"},"modified":"2016-01-09T16:41:57","modified_gmt":"2016-01-09T16:41:57","slug":"farnley-haugh-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2016\/01\/09\/farnley-haugh-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Farnley Haugh landslide in Northumberland, northern England"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Farnley Haugh landslide in Northumberland, northern England<\/h5>\n<p>In the spell of extremely heavy rainfall that has affected the UK in the last few weeks, railway slopes have inevitably suffered.\u00a0 Perhaps the most interesting landslide is at Farnley Haugh in Northumberland on the line that connects Newcastle to Carlisle &#8211; this is an essentially east &#8211; west link across the Pennine hills that connects between the two main north-south railway lines.\u00a0 The Farnley Haugh landslide has closed the section of line between Prudhoe and Hexham.\u00a0 The closure is indefinite, [with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernrail.org\/news\/7842\">Northern Rail saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Customers are being advised that the line between Hexham and Prudhoe will be closed for several weeks\u00a0to allow the area to be safely assessed and restored.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BGSLandslides\">BGS Landslides<\/a> retweeted an aerial image of the landslide:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17357\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/01\/16_01-Farnley-Haugh-1-e1452328508497.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17357\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17357\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2016\/01\/16_01-Farnley-Haugh-1-e1452328508497.jpg\" alt=\"Farnley Haugh landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Farnley Haugh landslide via a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BGSLandslides\">BGS Landslides<\/a> retweet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>At present the portion of the landslide that has affected the line is a comparatively small more active section on the lower right side of the active slope, where the trees have fallen.\u00a0 The large amount of fine sediment on the track in this area is interesting &#8211;
