{"id":173,"date":"2010-04-09T12:50:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T12:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/04\/09\/the-location-of-the-morro-do-bumba-landslide-in-niteroi-brazil\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:35:54","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:35:54","slug":"the-location-of-the-morro-do-bumba-landslide-in-niteroi-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/04\/09\/the-location-of-the-morro-do-bumba-landslide-in-niteroi-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"The location of the Morro do Bumba landslide in Niteroi, Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/americas\/8610666.stm\">video posted on the BBC website<\/a>, I have managed to locate the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/04\/another-major-landslide-in-rio-de.html\">Niteroi landslide<\/a>, which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/garbage-dump-landslides.html\">garbage dump slide<\/a> that is believed to have killed over 200 people.&nbsp; The slide is at the following coordinates:&nbsp; 22.893\u00b0 S, -43.085\u00b0W<\/p>\n<p>On a Google Earth image this area looks like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-4.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;A zoomed in view looks like this (the crown of the landslide is at the bottom of the image):<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-5.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Thus, a perspective view of the landslide looks like this (looking from the toe towards the crown):<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-6.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It is clear that a large number of houses have been destroyed.&nbsp; Google Earth measurements suggest that the slide is about 300 metres long and 50-70 metres wide. &nbsp;&nbsp; It is interesting that most of the crown appears to be located at a road (see the screenshot from the video below) &#8211; which might suggest that drainage was an issue in the causation of the failure:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-7.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The description of the slide as an old garbage dump is certainly correct judging by this image from <a href=\"NewWindow('\/rio\/fotogaleria\/2010\/11394\/','fotogaleria',720,580,'no','no');\">O Globo<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Niteroi-8.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The likelihood of surviving burial in a garbage landslide is very low given the density of the material, the release of methane gas and in some cases the release of heat from the decaying material &#8211; see my <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/garbage-dump-landslides.html\">earlier post here on the hazards posed by garbage dump landslides<\/a>.&nbsp;
