{"id":172,"date":"2010-04-12T13:58:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-12T13:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/04\/12\/images-of-the-italian-railway-landslide-today\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:35:54","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:35:54","slug":"images-of-the-italian-railway-landslide-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/04\/12\/images-of-the-italian-railway-landslide-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Images of the Italian railway landslide today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A landslide (<span class=\"short_text\"><span style=\"background-color: white\" title=\"landslide\">frana in Italian)<\/span><\/span> occurred this morning at Merano, near to Bolzano in northern Italy, striking a train that was derailed.&nbsp; Reports suggest that <strike>11<\/strike> 9 people were killed and a further 30 were injured.&nbsp; This is a Google Earth image of Merano with a railway line marked in black, but I am not sure where the accident occurred or even if it is in this image.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/goog_2052167\"><br \/><\/a><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/\">Il Giornale<\/a> has some images of the accident site:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-2.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_04-Italy-3.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"font-null\">From the look of these images, this appears to be a shallow failure from a slope above a retaining wall.&nbsp; Early suggestions are that the  landslide    was triggered by a leaking irrigation pipe, which saturated the soil, triggering failure.&nbsp; Clearly that is just conjecture at this point.<\/div>\n<div class=\"font-null\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"font-null\">This type of landslide-induced rail accident occurs occasionally.&nbsp; I am reminded of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/wp-content\/scripts\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com.bouncer.php\/daveslandslideblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/landslide-induced-train-accident-in.html\">this one<\/a> in China in July last year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"font-null\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A landslide (frana in Italian) occurred this morning at Merano, near to Bolzano in northern Italy, striking a train that was derailed.&nbsp; Reports suggest that 11 9 people were killed and a further 30 were injured.&nbsp; This is a Google Earth image of Merano with a railway line marked in black, but I am not sure where the accident occurred or even if it is in this image.
