an intriguing video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Samarco dam failure<\/h5>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XD_8y3VweZc\">Youtube there is a video<\/a> that provides a compilation of videos that are purportedly from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/11\/10\/fundao-dam\/\">Samarco dam failure<\/a> that released a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/11\/08\/samarco-1\/\">mudslide of tailings<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/11\/06\/bento-rodrigues-1\/\">destroyed the town of Bento Rodriguez<\/a> in Brazil a week ago.\u00a0 The video is over 12 minutes long and has clearly been obtained from elsewhere:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XD_8y3VweZc?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The first sequence shows water cascading through the spillway of a dam.\u00a0 I do not believe that this is anything to do with the Samarco dam failure &#8211; it does not seem to fit with the observations of the accident.<\/p>\n<p>The second sequence, starting at about 24 seconds, clearly does show an aspect of the disaster.\u00a0 It is not great quality, but my interpretation is that it shows the area of the Fundao dam shortly after its failure.\u00a0 This appears to be be tailings left in the tailing pond:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16822\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-13-e1447314005169.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16822\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16822\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-13-e1447314005169.jpg\" alt=\"Samarco dam\" width=\"640\" height=\"454\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Samarco dam site via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XD_8y3VweZc\">Youtube<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst this image appears to be site of the dam itself, or what was left of it.\u00a0 There appears to be a great deal of dust in the air &#8211; the remains of the movement perhaps?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16825\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-14-e1447314205509.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16825\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16825\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-14-e1447314205509.jpg\" alt=\"Samarco dam\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Site of the Samarco dam via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XD_8y3VweZc\">Youtube<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This actually seems to be the best footage available so far of the site of the Samarco dam, the Fundao dam, that failed, though it does not shed much more light on the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The next sequence, starting at about 50 seconds, is the most intriguing.\u00a0 This seems to show a very large mudslide arriving in a small rural community in good weather.\u00a0 The slide is enormous and extremely destructive:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16826\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16826\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16826\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-15.jpg\" alt=\"Samarco dam\" width=\"402\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-15.jpg 402w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/11\/15_11-Bento-15-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samarco dam mudslide via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XD_8y3VweZc\">Youtube<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>I am unsure as to whether this is the event at Bento Rodrigues caused by the Samarco dam failure, but its fits the known facts.\u00a0 It is certainly a most impressive landslide.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the remainder of the video shows the damage from the landslide, which has been described elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the fallout continues.\u00a0 As Samarco and its owners struggle to manage the disaster and the publicity, and of course the likely costs, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telesurtv.net\/english\/news\/Experts-Issued-Early-Warnings-About-Brazilian-Mining-Disaster---20151111-0034.html\">suggestions in the media that there had been warnings two years ago<\/a> that the Samarco dam was not safe:-<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A 2013 report conducted by The Instituto Pristino linked to the Federal University of Minas Gerais, warned of structural design flaws and predicted the circumstances that could lead to a dam burst at the Samarco operation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The report had already highlighted the fragility of these structures and the necessity of increased rigor in monitoring them,&#8221;
